Laser Distance Meter Measures The Distances With The Touch of a ...

Laser rangefinder is a general-purpose, electronic tools, you can measure the distance before pressing on one side. Accurate, fast, does not require the user to go up the stairs, and put them in the event of another dimension of risk, preferably professionals and quickly replace tape in the construction industry and in other places.

This method can easily illustrate the plan. Laser meters flowchart will include three boxes, one for each major component. Those diodes, laser diodes, laser sensors and timer circuit. Measures the elapsed time during the measurement with a laser pulse from the diode to the target and then back to the sensor. Used, the rate formula (light), divided by the distance equal to 2 times. Ultrasonic distance measurement device according to the same formula that has similar performance, but due to the measuring principle is sound, it is not accurate and is not suitable for professional use.

Considered an entry-level or advanced mode. Entry-level devices up to 100 feet (30 meters), a small building for the interior. Another distance you can add, subtract, we can calculate the surface area and volume, and can not get away with using the Pythagorean theorem. Advanced tools, greater length, typically 200-600 meters, high precision, and with more features, each measurement solutions. Their prices range from $ 200 to $ 1,000.

Ideal distance laser range finder can calculate the distance of 200 meters, the accuracy of plus or minus 1 mm. This is a user-friendly interface. You can calculate the area, the space segment, triangle, trapezoid, polygon, and volumes have a few keystrokes. The results can be presented in different types of units, including the decimal feet. This use of the tilt sensor, the true horizontal distance can be easily calculated. Remember, as much as possible the last value for future access, because it is much faster than the alternating attention between the measured values and write. Screen display and has an easy to read format, in order to understand the various lighting conditions. There should be more reference measurements, including before, after, and the extended position. Bracket can double as a measurement of the device can be rotated 180 degrees. This extension allows measurements made inside and around the corner edge. Is a function of data transfer, USB or wireless. It is necessary to have a strong environmental protection in order to ensure continuity of operations in the presence of dust, water, or. It should have an ergonomic design, compact size and light weight. This should be a battery efficient. Finally, it should be protected, and a generous three-year warranty.

The most versatile laser distance meter in the world and close to ideal DISTO D8 with Leica Geosystems. Although it is the most expensive, it is gratifying that it costs less than the entry-level equipment 10 years ago, when these appeared. That says a lot about the technology and the market.

When choosing a laser range finder to get started, it is best to list your needs, and then look at the different models to see which one is most suitable. Of the three largest producers ? Leica Bosch and Fluke Corporation is the most popular and reliable laser rangefinder. Your search can be limited to three manufacturers 14 models.

Have an ounce of nuts and about 6 dates daily as an evening snack.

4. Dear Ms. Radhakrishnan, I had a query regarding dietary questionnaires and would really appreciate your guidance. Many questionnaires carry the question: ?How many glasses of water do you drink in a day?? I was wondering what is
the rationale behind this question since it is a very subjective question. Would it be relevant to ask this question to an elderly population?Look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Nivedita

Yes this is a valid question for elderly people. Elderly people do not feel as thirsty as younger people and may risk being dehydrated. They may need to be coaxed to drink sufficient water.

Yes, water intake varies from individual depending on their physical activities, weather and general health (people with kidney failure or cardiac failure may need to restrict water intake). But if a question is asked in normal context and not regarding a particular type of people, the answer should be 6 to 8 glasses/day

5. i have height of 5.4 feet and weight 96 i want to reduce my weight by changing my eating habits means through low calorie food that helps in non preparation of fats through extra calories so please suggest me the food that is chatpataa in taste and low calorie because non chatpata food cannot full fill the desire please co operate me with your suggestions

Follow the diet in the article What goes into a 1500kcal weight loss plan

Use whatever herbs, spices, condiments you need to make the food chatpataa. The only thing you need to reduce is oil in cooking. Squeeze lots of lemon juice on the salad. This strong sour taste will curb your hunger. Eating one or two amla also helps when you feel hungry.

New maps may reduce tourism impacts on Hawaiian dolphins

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Over-eager eco-tourists intent on seeing spinner dolphins up close may inadvertently be disturbing the charismatic animals' daytime rest periods and driving them out of safe habitats in bays along Hawaii's coast.

Scientists at Duke and Stony Brook universities have developed a promising new tool that may help to limit repeated human disturbances and help reduce their negative impacts on the dolphins.

"Using the maps produced through this study we can identify the bays where the effects of human activities on spinner dolphins should be monitored most closely, and where immediate conservation actions are required," said David W. Johnston, research scientist at Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment.

The researchers' tool shows that only a small number of bays ? 21 out of 99 ? in a study area along the western coastlines of the main Hawaiian islands were suitable habitats for resting dolphins. Knowing this, "conservation efforts can be focused on specific areas of importance," Johnston said,

"We may be able to minimize detrimental effects on dolphins by putting restrictions or preventative measures into place in a relatively small number of bays, rather than limiting access to dolphins along the entire coast," said the study's lead author, Lesley H. Thorne, a lecturer in marine science at Stony Brook University, who received her PhD from Duke in 2010. "That benefits tourists and tourism operators as well as the dolphins."

In the study, the researchers used the geographic coordinates and key environmental factors ? such as water depth and calmness, the size and proportions of the bays and distances from deep-water foraging grounds ? for hundreds of spinner dolphin sightings made in the study area between 2000 and 2010. The results appear August 27 in the online, open-access peer-reviewed journal PLoS ONE.

Spinners are small dolphins famed for their graceful aerial movements and balletic spins. They are found in tropical and subtropical oceans around the world and some divide their time between daytime rest periods in shallow, protected bays and nighttime foraging in more exposed waters.

Distinguishing between sightings of resting and active dolphins was key to defining critical habitats, Thorne said. While socially active spinner dolphins are more tolerant of humans' presence, resting dolphins will leave the safety of a bay and retreat to less suitable open waters if humans repeatedly disturb them.

"Sleep is essential for most animals," added Johnston. "When deprived of their necessary 'zzzz's,' they gradually show a decreased ability to process information and remain attentive to environmental stimuli. In technical lingo, we call this a 'vigilance decrement'."

Spinner dolphins are no exception to the rule. The researchers say dolphins that experience human harassment every day during their rest periods never fully recover their vigilance decrement. Their ability to forage successfully and detect the presence of nearby predators is also degraded, and their ability to produce sounds to communicate and navigate may also be impaired, he said.

Scientists and conservationists have long worried that spinners' popularity with tourists ? and overlap of their resting habitats with popular ocean recreation destinations ? may be placing them at risk. Reports of interactions have increased sharply in recent years, but few published studies have examined the detrimental impacts these interruptions may have on the animals, especially at the population level.

"It would be next to impossible to survey spinner populations and human activities in every bay that might be a resting habitat," Thorne said. "We're talking about hundreds of bays in the Hawaiian islands alone."

"Using predictive models, such as the maximum entropy spatial modeling approaches we've produced, is a much more cost-effective method," she said. "This type of modeling has only recently been applied to the study of marine mammals, but our study suggests it may be especially useful."

Thorne and Johnston plan to test their models by conducting similar studies of spinner dolphin distributions and habitat use in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and other sites in the Pacific islands region. Results from those studies, they said, could confirm the new models' usefulness.

Johnston and Thorne's co-authors on the PLoS ONE study include Dean L. Urban, professor of landscape ecology at Duke's Nicholas School, and Lars Bejdar, associate professor at Murdoch University, Australia, and adjunct assistant professor at Duke.

The data on spinner dolphin sightings used to develop the models in the study were provided by a team of eight additional co-authors from Murdoch University, the Pacific Islands Photo-Identification Network, the Cascadia Research Collective, the Hawai'i Marine Mammal Consortium, the Hawai'i Association for Marine Education and Research, the Dolphin Institute, the University of Hawai'i (UH) at Hilo, UH at M?noa, and Marine Mammal Research Consultants.

Smoking In China: A Way Of Life - Borderless News and Views

Through most of my life I have considered China a country of good health and healthy habits; I thought of it as a place where everyone is always eating vegetables, drinking tea and practicing Kung Fu to stay fit. However, the reality is much different from what you would imagine. Many in China engage in one of the dirtiest habits you can think of?. SMOKING. Yes, I can honestly say that China is the smoking capital of world. Funded by the government, cigarettes are a major component of society in China.

Every day one will see people smoking inside restaurants and shopping centers. It is even a tradition to give someone a cigarette or two when you meet them, just to give a greeting and show respect. The more expensive the cigarette the higher in society a person seems; there are some cigarette brands that cost 200 to 500 RMB depending upon where they are purchased and who purchases them.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding the smoking issues in China, due to the fact that the cigarette factories build?hundreds of?primary schools all over China. Most people know that smoking is not good for their health, but they have to admit that the money helps their education system. So here lies the issue: Do they push for a ban on smoking or let things remain as they are?

It was stated in a recent study in China that China has over 1/3 of the world?s smokers and approximately one million individuals in China die from smoking-related issues annually. If nothing changes the figure is expected to rise to two million by 2020. An estimated 540 million people are harmed by ?second-hand smoke? ? 180 million of whom are minor. The numbers are staggering and, in my mind, this is enough to start making some changes. To further show the extent of the problem there?s even a China Tobacco Museum in Shanghai, that has seven exhibition halls that cover a range of topics, from the history of the tobacco industry to smoking control and tobacco culture.

Not only are there healths risks there are also large environmental risks. Growing tobacco requires a larger amount of harmful chemicals than for are used with other types of crops. Approximately 70 percent of these chemicals will end up polluting the surrounding soil and ground water. China already has an air and water pollution problem so this adds to the concern for the welfare of the people. The China National Tobacco Company, China?s largest tobacco manufacturer, uses 100,000 tons of paper for cigarettes annually, an amount equal to approximately two million trees.

Don?t get me wrong, China does have a few laws that ban smoking in subways, buses and hospitals but nobody seems to follow these laws and/or they are not enforced. Let?s face it; with about 350 million smokers in China, and over 500 billion RMB ($78,125,000) worth of tax revenue and a thriving tobacco industry that provides income for over 200 million tobacco planters, one can see why the government would hesitate to enforce a ban on smoking. Smoking has simply become a way of life here.

My disappointment in learning how terrible the smoking condition is in China was extreme. My ideals of a healthy, peaceful China were all unrealistic. The question that is on the mind of the Chinese government nowadays should be ?Do?we want a better GDP or better public health??? So far, I think?money is winning?again.

Romney's Energy Plan Doubles Down On Fossil Fuels

Evan Vucci/AP Photo

In unveiling his energy policy during a campaign event on Aug. 23, Mitt Romney says he wants to set a goal of North American energy independence by 2020.

Mitt Romney outlined an energy plan Thursday that would guide his Republican presidency. It focuses heavily on expanding the supply of fossil fuels. The presumptive nominee said the U.S., Mexico and Canada together could reach energy independence by 2020.

But the plan makes no mention of climate change and would end subsidies for cleaner sources of energy, such as wind and solar.

Romney unveiled the energy plan at a campaign stop in New Mexico, where he fought the wind as he showed flip-charts of his policy. That was wind's major appearance in a speech that was overwhelmingly about fossil fuels.

The plan would open up oil and gas development off the Atlantic Coast, as well as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. And he proposed putting states in charge of regulating oil and gas development on federal lands to speed its development.

"Three million jobs come back to this country, by taking advantage of something we have right underneath our feet," Romney said. "That's oil and gas and coal. We're going to make it happen; we're going to create those jobs."

The Romney energy plan, laid out in a 21-page white paper, relies heavily on creating deeper partnerships with Mexico and Canada. Mexico could use technical help to reverse its declining oil production, he said, and "Canada has oil sands. We're going to take advantage of those, and build that Keystone pipeline and work with Canada to make sure we have advantage of their great energy sources."

All told, that would dramatically boost oil and gas production, the candidate said.

"I will set a national goal of ... North American energy independence by 2020."

The Romney white paper cites a study by Citibank showing that's possible ? provided there are sharp efforts to reduce energy demand. But energy conservation is not part of the Romney plan.

Energy independence is often cited as a way to be free of price fluctuations caused by conflicts in oil-rich regions. But that wouldn't actually lock in stable oil prices.

"Last year, when civil war broke out in Libya and oil markets were deeply disrupted, the price of oil from Canada went up by more in percentage terms than oil from the Middle East," says Michael Levi from the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.

Prices are driven by the global market, regardless of where we buy the oil from, because if the world price skyrockets, our trading partners would cash in on that. Overall, Levi praises some of the fossil-fuel proposals in the Romney plan, though he says it only addresses part of the energy picture.

"The word climate does not appear in the energy plan. That is a conspicuous absence," Levi says.

You can't deal with climate change without finding ways to reduce burning fossil fuels, and that's not in the Romney plan. Indeed, the Republican says he does not want to continue subsidizing wind and solar energy, which are clean supplies of energy.

That drew a rebuke from White House.

"While the Republican approach denigrates forms of energy like wind, this president believes that investing in renewable energy is essential to enhancing our energy independence," said spokesman Jay Carney.

In his energy speech, Romney framed the matter quite differently.

"Sometimes, I have the impression that the whole regulatory attitude of the administration is trying to stop oil and gas and coal," Romney said. "That they don't want those sources, that instead they want to get those things so expensive and so rare that wind and solar become highly cost effective and efficient."

Romney said he likes wind and solar "as much as the next person," but those technologies should rise or fall simply on their economic merits.

NFL 'predetermined' officials' lockout, referees' attorney says | City ...

There doesn?t seem to be an end in sight for NFL game-day officials who have been locked out and in contract discussions for entire offseason. Replacement officials have taken over referee duties as there is no indication that the league and the NFL Referees Association will resume talks.

The NFLRA?s lead negotiator, Michael Arnold, said Wednesday that the NFL has been set on maintaining the lockout for some time.

?The league has apparently predetermined that they?re going to keep us locked out until the third or fourth week of the regular season,? Arnold told?Newsday.??Their strategy has always been lockout. We feel they?ve had a strategy from the beginning to lock us out.?

Greg Aiello, the NFL?s senior vice president of communications, said Thursday the NFL is ?available to meet with the NFLRA at any time to negotiate a new contract.?

NFL Commisioner Roger Goodell has characterized the differences between the two parties as ?philosophical.? The?cheap nfl jerseys??We?re anxious to get a deal done, but it has to get done that it?s going to help us for the long term,? Goodell said at?NFL Fantasy Draft Week?in New York City. ?It?s not a short-term issue.??wants to add more crews and make some of the refs full-time employees. Currently, all game officials are part-time.

But Arnold believes the NFL is in no rush to come to a resolution and the two sides? differences won?t be reconciled in the foreseeable future.

?(The NFL) told us (last month) that if this thing was going to settle, it was going to be on their terms and they were not going to make any additional offers,? Arnold said.

Nokia announces In-Location, 22-strong industry alliance for mobile indoor positioning

With most of the great outdoors pretty well mapped within an inch of its life, indoors is the final navigation frontier. Today Nokia has announced "In-Location" an alliance of 22 companies with the goal of driving and unifying industry innovation in mobile indoor positioning. Names on the list include Broadcom, Samsung, Sony Mobile and Qualcomm, but there are some notable exceptions. The technologies mentioned include Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi, which we've already started to see being explored, and members are encouraged to share data of their own existing pilots. We can apparently expect pre-commercial work and business model verifications this year, with handset-based implementations said to be finding their way out in 2013. Full PR can be found, assistance free, after the break.

Sides dig in as Chicago teachers strike looms

CHICAGO (AP) ? Teachers picketed outside a district office Wednesday in the shadow of a giant inflatable rat as school board members inside authorized spending $25 million in the event of the first Chicago teacher strike in a quarter-century.

The brinksmanship came just weeks after the two sides reached an agreement on hiring new teachers to allow for a longer school day. That issue once seemed to be the biggest roadblock to a new contract, but the bargaining and posturing has not let up as the two sides come down to the last few weeks before 400,000 Chicago students are all back in public schools.

"We have had 45 sessions of negotiations, and we're still pretty far apart," Karen Lewis, the teachers' union president, told the Board of Education at Wednesday's meeting.

Last week, the union began printing strike signs and made sure the media knew about it. On Monday, teachers started informational picketing at several elementary schools to make sure parents understood their issues ? and to keep the contracts in the spotlight.

A union spokeswoman even hinted that if an agreement isn't reached, teachers might take their signs all the way to North Carolina to the Democratic National Convention, where Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is scheduled to speak.

Behind the tough talk is a tense showdown between Emanuel and the teachers, with possible ramifications beyond Chicago at a time when most unions have seen their power slip dramatically. The mayor angered the teachers with his demands for a longer school day and other concessions, and the result appears to be an energized union that authorized a strike by a wide margin.

"Organized labor around the country is saying, 'What can we learn here? What clever moves can we emulate?'" said Timothy Knowles, director of the University of Chicago's Urban Education Institute. "And mayors are looking at Chicago and asking, 'Is Rahm going to pull this off?'"

School Board spokeswoman Becky Carroll declined to release details of the contingency plan the board essentially green-lighted Wednesday that authorized the district to spend $25 million if teachers go on strike.

She said the plan, which officials have been working on for weeks, will include providing a "safe environment" for the district's students and make sure the tens of thousands of students who rely on the schools for two meals a day will be fed during the strike.

Union officials say they're still concerned about job security for teachers and other staff, wages and health benefits. They also don't want to give anything away now, knowing it would be difficult if not impossible to reclaim anything in another contract.

State law requires the union to give a 10-day notice if it intends to strike. Union delegates voted Wednesday evening to authorize Lewis to present that advance notice at her discretion.

However, Lewis said in a statement after the meeting that no decision had been reached on whether to call a work stoppage.

"Although we have inched one step closer to fulfilling the legal requirements before we can strike, we have made no decision to do so at this time," she said.

A strike date would be set if and when the notice is given. Many students are already back in school, with the rest beginning on Sept. 4.

Lewis, who has repeatedly said that the 2 percent raise offered by the board is not acceptable, made it clear that she did not believe that the school district's financial picture was not nearly as dire as the mayor and the board members have said it was.

"Unfortunately, it's the same story year in and year out that there's never enough money," she told the board.

Lewis also suggested there were problems with the deal that calls for the district to provide more instructional time by hiring extra teachers so that current teachers won't have to work a longer day.

Outside the board meeting, Lewis told The Associated Press there was concern about counselors having to do lunchroom duty and reports that schools have not hired the music teachers, art teachers and others that the district said would be.

Carroll said Lewis' allegations were "just not true" and alleged that she was playing to the cameras.

"Kids are finally getting the full school day they deserve," Chicago Public Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard told the board. "We have come so far for the children of this city. We cannot turn our backs on them now."

To be sure, the city has toned down its rhetoric from the days last year when Emanuel in his push for a longer school day infuriated teachers by saying they students were getting "the shaft."

Back then, he persuaded lawmakers to write a special provision into statewide reforms that required only the Chicago Teacher's Union to get 75 percent of its members to authorize a walkout. The union then pushed up its vote to give retiring teachers a voice and the union leverage over the summer? proceeded to get 90 percent.

Some parents say it's difficult to know whom to believe but that they are expecting an agreement that keeps their kids in school.

"It would just be so unfortunate if a strike does happen," said Rasheda Muhammad, while back-to-school shopping with her 15-year-old daughter, Madinah, Wednesday at a Target store in Chicago.

Jeneen Lomax, who has one son who attends a public magnet school that focuses on science and math and one in private school, calls the possibility of a strike "devastating."

"They need to be exposed to as much learning as possible," she said.

Chrysler suspends incentives, penalties for dealer customer service

Chrysler dealership sale

Last December, J.D. Power's Sales Satisfaction Index Study ranked Chrysler's Jeep, Ram and Dodge brands at the bottom of the list. The Chrysler brand itself fared somewhat better with a ranking of nine out of 19 brands.

With those scores in mind, Chrysler execs deduced that their customer satisfaction incentive program for dealers just wasn't working. Under that program, the largest dealers could earn as much as $200,000 for meeting customer service, facilities and management goals. Per quarter. So the program is being scrapped in favor of a system more like that used by Toyota. Instead of rewards and penalties, Chrysler dealers will now be motivated by simple profits.

"If you perform at a higher level based on customer experience, your percentage of loyalty will grow, your percentage of service retention will grow," Mark Engelsdorfer, Chrysler's director of market representation tells Automotive News. "With that will come a pretty substantial growth in your operating profit."

Chrysler's new program was drawn up with help from its dealer network and seems to be more amenable to dealers than the previous system. The new initiative "is really emulating a partnership," Mike Maroone, COO of AutoNation Inc. said in the same article. "Their willingness to walk away from the carrot and stick is really the right way to go."

Drinking Milk Not Linked to Early Puberty

Despite popular belief, drinking cow's milk does not increase children's risk for early puberty, according to a new study from China.

The study found no link between the amount of cow's milk children in Hong Kong drank between ages 6 months and 5 years, and the age at which they began puberty.

Whether or not the children were breastfed also did not affect the age puberty began, the researchers said.

"These findings suggest that breast-feeding or cow's milk consumption does not play a major role in pubertal timing," among children in non-Western countries, the researchers said.

The new study addresses some potential misconceptions held by the public, said Dr. Andrew Bremer, a pediatric endocrinology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, who was not involved in the study. "To my knowledge, there's no definitive evidence that exposure to milk causes precious puberty," Bremer said.

In the 1990s, when research first began to suggest that children were starting puberty earlier, some suspected that growth hormones in cow's milk were to blame. But the hormone given to cows ? recombinant bovine growth hormone, or rBGH ? is degraded during digestion, and so would not be expected to have a biological effect.

"From a pediatrician's standpoint, we don't want parents to be withholding milk or milk products for the unsubstantiated fear of it causing early puberty," Bremer said.

Previous studies on the topic conducted in Western countries have found mixed results, with one study in the United States suggesting a link between the frequency of cow's milk consumption and early puberty, but a study conducted in Turkey found no such association.

Unlike these earlier studies, the new study had a more rigorous design ? it followed the same group of children over about 13 years.

However, because the study was conducted in China, it's not clear whether the results apply to the United States, said Dr. Ruth Lawrence, professor of pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. This country's many ethnic groups have different breast-feeding and milk consumption habits, and different rates of development (for instance, African-American girls tend to mature earlier than Caucasian girls), Lawrence said. A careful study needs to be conducted to determine whether breast-feeding, milk consumption, or ethnic differences in culture or biology are linked with the age of puberty, Lawrence said.

More recently, researchers have pointed to childhood obesity in the U.S. as a possible culprit in early puberty.

In the new study, researchers analyzed information from about 7,500 boys and girls born in Hong Kong in 1997.

Mothers were periodically asked whether their children were breastfed or formula-fed during the first 18 months of life. About 10 years later, mothers were ask to think back to how often their child consumed milk at ages 6 months, 3 years and 5 years.

Children were periodically assessed for signs of puberty between ages 6 and 13. Puberty was considered to have begun when the girls' breasts or boys' genitalia reached a certain stage of development.

During infancy, 57 percent of children were never breastfed, 36 percent were fed some breast milk and some baby formula, and 6.4 percent were exclusively breastfed for at least three months.

At age 5, 33 percent drank cow's milk one time per week or less, 21.2 percent consumed it two to six times per week, and 45.2 percent consumed it daily.

The average age of puberty onset was 9.6 years for girls, and 11.7 years ?for boys.

One thing the study did not take into account is the weight of children, which is important, because weight is known to affect age at puberty, said Dr. Richard Schanler, a pediatrician at Cohen's Children's Medical Center of New York in New Hyde Park.

Breast-feeding has been found to protect against childhood obesity, Schanler said. Thus, breast-feeding or formula feeding could affect the age of puberty because of these factors affect weight, he said.

Breast-feeding is known to have a number of important benefits, and the findings do not change doctors' views about its benefits, Schanler said.

The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Hong Kong. It is published today (Aug. 20) in the journal Pediatrics.

Pass it on: Cow's milk consumption does not appear to increase the risk of early puberty.

Bonds: A New Way to Fund Clean Energy

The know-how and the tools to create efficient, clean energy projects are in place. What?s missing is the money. That gap is the reason for a recent partnership between Clean Energy Group (CEG) and the Council of Development Finance Agencies (CDFA). The partnership -- Clean Energy + Bond Finance Initiative (CE+BFI) -- aims to find ways to use bond financing to increase U.S. clean energy investment by an additional $5 billion to $20 billion in the next five years.

To help accomplish their goal, the partnership has created a national task force comprised of more than 50 representatives from the nation's top public and private clean energy and development finance agencies and organizations.

I talked to Toby Rittner, president and CEO of the Council of Development Finance Agencies, about what his group hopes to accomplish and what?s in it for states. Here are edited excerpts from that conversation.

How is this initiative different or noteworthy?

Energy folks work on energy efficiency and the development of technologies; they?re technology experts, not finance experts. My organization (CDFA) is made up of representatives of state and local government development finance agencies. We don?t know energy, but we know how capital markets work; how investors look at tax-exempt finance; and what motivates investors. It?s logical for us to say that clean energy is just infrastructure so we can underwrite it the way we underwrite sewers and bridges and other public facilities.

The uniqueness of the partnership is that this is the first time ever in the U.S. that clean energy and bond finance come together to scale up. The idea is to bring together the best of finance in the bond market with the best of the energy-development sector to create a financing methodology and best practices to move clean energy forward. Very few states use bond finance to support clean energy, so it?s an opportunity.

The national task force will look at existing examples of state clean energy programs. Who and what will they be looking at?

We?ll be focusing on eight to 10 existing state or local government models to see if they can be replicated around the country. The task force will be looking at what aspects worked well and why, and what aspects struggled.

One of the models is Morris County, N.J. The county wanted to figure out how to use renewable energy in its buildings. In a public-private partnership with a developer, the county used a creative, taxable bond structure to finance the infrastructure -- to put renewable energy (it happens to be solar) on all of its facilities. The developer agreed to develop the facilities, install the technology, and manage and operate the facilities. There was an agreement that the county would purchase power for 20 years at a specific rate, and therefore the developer got a long-term lease and a long-term payment stream. The county issued the taxable bonds to finance the project. The questions the task force will be looking at is whether there's a way to scale up. Can we take it to other states? Is there a way to make the bonds tax-exempt, which would make it less expensive? Also, what are the limitations? What if it?s not a county building but a shopping center or a university?

What other models are you looking at?

The state of Washington issued a bond so nonprofits like hospitals and schools can manage energy efficiency programs. So a YMCA can go to the state and say, ?I need $100,000 to renovate my building to make it energy efficient. With the savings on energy costs, I will pay back the loan fund.? The state is using the proceeds from the bond to help energy efficiency. That?s happening in a lot of places. It?s easy to do and not overly complex but you have to have good partners, good players and a development plan in place for how this is all going to work. Washington didn?t just issue a bond and hope people would come; it had projects lined up. So there has to be a lot of due diligence. We would look at why Wall Street was willing to buy Washington?s bonds; how the state structured its bond to make bondholders and investors feel secure; and whether those bonds could be issued with better credit enhancement. The state of Washington is big. We would want to see if a smaller entity -- say the city of Cleveland -- could do it on a smaller scale. Would Cleveland have the same access to capital markets?

Anything else?

A number of states have system benefit charges where they charge users of their energy grid a fee. Those charges come back to the state and are put in a fund that could be anywhere from $15 million to $100 million. New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and Oregon are some of the states that have these funds. Traditionally, these funds sit in state energy offices and are used for ongoing project development or maybe to incentivize a company. We're looking at a model where you take those funds and use them as credit enhancement or as debt reserve for a bond fund that could support manufacturing and the supply chain. We would be looking at the political and economic feasibility of getting a state to commit those funds to bond structures. Connecticut is looking at it right now. Convincing energy experts to spend their hard-earned money on bond finance is difficult to do. We could use that model to break through barriers if we get a couple of states to try it.

There are other model ideas. Alaska is sitting on financial resources. Would they invest some of those resources in small bond funds in other states? They could help a community like Lexington, Ky., start a bond fund to support energy. Alaska would get a return on the bond fund and help clean energy in other parts of country. That?s the cutting edge.

I see you also have the U.S. Department of Energy on the task force. What?s their role?

The task force is an opportunity for what they could do -- maybe better loan guarantees, maybe create regional bond banks supported at the federal level. States know their energy needs. Here?s an opportunity to say to the feds, look at what we're doing: put programs in place to support us.

Is this kind of initiative a tough sell in today's economy?

States need affordable, efficient energy. They cannot ignore this issue. Businesses don?t locate where there's not proper energy infrastructure. Energy is one of a handful of things government has to get right. So it?s important to figure out a way to finance this stuff. It?s vital to a state?s economy.

Eid in America: Families Celebrate Eid Al-Fitr | Strollerderby

01 300x219 Lights, Gifts, Cookies! How American Families Celebrate Eid Al Fitr

Ribbons and lights adorn the mantel of California mom Anmah Ibraham.

Strings of lights, decorations, gifts, and cookies! This weekend, Muslim people around the world will be celebrating Eid Al-Fitr, the day marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Although the religious day of Eid only lasts one day, the celebration continues, typically for three days.

Here, two American moms?one on the East Coast and one on the West Coast?share how their families celebrate Eid Al-Fitr, one of the most important holidays in the Islamic religion. (The other major Islamic holiday is Eid Al-Adha, which will be celebrated in October this year.)

Our East Coast mom is my friend Margaret, who lives in Pennsylvania.?Our West Coast mom is Amnah Ibrahim, who blogs at the incredibly cool This Little Life of Mine, a great source for Pinterest-perfect crafts and recipes. (Can?t wait to make those star-and-moon cheddar crackers with my kids!)?In fact, I met Amnah because I kept stumbling on her cool decorations on Pinterest, and she graciously shared many of the images for the slideshow below.

?During Ramadan, we fast during the day,? explains Margaret, who lives outside of Philadelphia. We stop eating before the pre-dawn prayer, for us that?s around 4 o?clock in the morning. We break the fast at around 8 p.m. when the sun goes down. We do this for a month.?

?Of course, if you have any kind of illness, or if you?re pregnant, you?re not supposed to fast,? she adds. ?It?s not supposed to be a hardship. It?s about focusing on faith and family. You try to stay away from all of that stuff that?s been distracting you throughout the year, things that distract you from being a good and kind person.?

During Ramadan, Margaret avoids watching television, but does stay connected on the Internet.

?Some people don?t watch TV at all during Ramadan,? said Margaret, ?although some turn it on after we break the fast in the evening.?Some people will turn off Facebook, but most people want to stay connected. I think the average person still goes on the Internet, and of course if it?s a part of their work, they use the Internet.?

?Avoiding all these distractions helps to draw you back into the simple, peaceful ways of the religion. That?s what you?re supposed to focus on. It?s like your refresher course.?

On the morning of Eid, Margaret and her family will have a small, sweet food, typically involving dates, to eat while it is still dark out, before heading out to the prayer service. After the prayer service, her family stays and socializes for a while, and then comes home to celebrate with extended family and friends.

?Lots of our friends come over, not just our Muslim friends,? said Margaret. ?Our neighborhood is very diverse, and we we?re happy to share our holiday.?A lot of people don?t realize that Christianity, Judaism, and Islam all go back to the Old Testament. There are so many things we have in common. That?s why you see so many similarities in the way different religions celebrate holidays.?

Amnah Ibrahim, mom of three girls, celebrates Eid Al-Fitr in California, where she was born and raised.

?During Ramadan, we dedicate ourselves to God, to making ourselves better Muslims, better parents, better friends, better members of our community. After all that hard work, it?s a chance to enjoy ourselves.?

?Different cultures have different foods,? said Amnah, explaining that the foods of Eid Al-Fitr celebrations will vary depending on a person?s heritage.

?Palestinians?have a cookie called ma?amoul,? said Amnah, whose parents were born in Palestine. ?Those are passed out to everyone who comes to visit, and you take them with you when you visit family.?

Amnah?s family, like Margaret?s, will get up early on Eid Al-Fitr, and dress in new clothes bought specifically for Eid.

?We put on our best clothes,? said Amnah. ?Everyone comes dressed to the nines.?All the kids are excited, and they love showing off their new outfits and hair bows. It?s just a sea of gorgeous colors.?

?We go to attend our prayer service,? said Amnah. ?Every Muslim comes out of the woodwork, because it?s such a special holiday. People who don?t normally come to prayer services will come to this one. After the morning prayer, everyone socializes for a while, and the kids play. Typically, our mosque has goody bags for the kids, and moon bounces. Then everyone goes to their home family celebration.?

?Our family goes out to breakfast. That?s our little tradition. We?re starving by then!?

When Amnah and her family get home, their children tear into beautifully-wrapped gifts. Family and friends will come over, bringing food so that no one has to do all the cooking.

?We?ll have a barbecue or something for dinner,? said Amnah. ?Everyone brings something to share. We socialize, and laugh, and watch the kids play with their toys. We take pictures.?We?re just having fun all day. It?s a party.?

One the second and third days of Eid, there?s no prayer service to attend. Instead, her family will join a few others at a park for a picnic, or meet up at a friend?s house. Her children receive their ?big present? on the first day of Eid, but Amnah makes them a gift bag of smaller presents for the second day as well.

?It means a ?lot to me, to see them get so excited about it,? said Amnah. ?I?want them to be proud of their heritage and be excited about it. It?s really about making it special for the whole family, and for our kids.?

    Eid Lights with Ribbon

Lights are an important part of decorating for Eid, said Amnah. But when the lights are unplugged during daylight hours, the long strings of lights draped around the house "begin looking like spiderwebs on steroids," she jokes. Tying on ribbon and adding other trim keeps her mantel looking pretty day and night.

Mobile Pwn2Own: A Safe Environment for Security Researchers and ...

Guest post from Jerry of the BBSIRT team ? Ed.

This year on the BlackBerry? Security Incident Response Team (BBSIRT), we increased our efforts to collaborate with the security research community. In June, we held the BlackBerry Security Summit featuring some of the industry?s elite researchers including Robert Seacord, Michael Eddington, Andy Davis, Josh Lackey, Zach Lanier, Vincenzo Iozzo, Willem Pinckaers, and Dino Dai Zovi. During the event, there was a full day of talks followed by deep technical discussions with our product and security teams. These exchanges were great and everyone walked away knowing that through collaboration, we can help make the mobile industry safer.

In July, we continued to show our support for the security research community by sponsoring the annual Black Hat conference in Las Vegas. We support dozens of conferences every year, but Black Hat is one of the largest gatherings of the research community in the world. This year, there was definitely an increased focus on mobile security and a lot of great presentations highlighting the need for the industry to continuously improve our understanding and monitoring of the threat landscape.

As the mobile threat landscape continues to evolve, it is imperative that we remain committed to advancing research and technology that will help bolster the security of not only our customers, but also the entire industry.

To further demonstrate our support for mobile security research and our passion for helping to fortify the industry, RIM? is sponsoring the Mobile Pwn2Own competition at EUSecWest in Amsterdam on September 19th and 20th. Due to the prizes available (including BlackBerry? PlayBook? tablets), we expect to see some cutting edge research as contestants focus on finding weaknesses in mobile web browsers, Near Field Communication (NFC), Short Message Service (SMS), and cellular baseband.

We are looking forward to the contest because it offers a safe environment for direct collaboration, and the details of the research are only discussed with the affected vendors. This means that customers are not put at risk while vendors work with researchers to address any issues that are uncovered. Sponsoring this contest is another logical step toward BBSIRT advancing the technologies that continue to help us deliver the unique level of security that our customers depend upon.

In addition to our collaboration with the security community, we are also focused on how RIM can help influence and support security throughout IT infrastructures. As a result, we are pleased to announce that we became a member of the Industry Consortium for Advancement of Security on the Internet (ICASI). ICASI fosters an open dialogue between industry leaders in information technology (IT) to address multi-product security challenges and to better protect the IT infrastructures that support the world?s enterprises, governments and citizens.

Our industry is no longer facing threats that are isolated to a single platform or technology. The focus areas for Mobile Pwn2Own highlight that the vulnerabilities discovered will likely cross platforms, and therefore, these emerging threats emphasize the need for associations like ICASI to help bridge the gap for the common good of everyone on the Internet.
