Overview: Individuals with acquired brain injury struggle with working memory deficits that are commonly experienced as difficulties with multi-tasking, forgetfulness and distractibility. The aim of this Cogmed training study was to examine whether working memory training, coaching, peer support and education would impact the perceived daily functioning of patients with acquired brain injury.

A sample of 18 adults, mean age 47.5 years, with acquired brain injury (TBI, tumor, and stroke) trained with Cogmed QM in groups of 4 to 6 people for 30 -45 minutes a day, 3 times a week for 7 to 8 weeks. In addition to training, participants also exchanged experiences of working memory deficits for 30 minutes on each training day as well as, learned about the function of working memory in everyday life for 30 minutes on each training day. Researchers collected self-report ratings of cognitive failures (CFQ; Cognitive Failures Questionnaire) and self-report ratings of occupational performance (COPM; Canadian Occupational Performance Measure) pre-, post- and 6 months after training. Results: Following training, all participants improved on the trained working memory tasks. Participants with the lowest baseline training performance showed the greatest improvement during training. Patients self-reported reduced cognitive failures on the CFQ at post-training that were maintained at 6 month follow-up as well as, significant improvements in occupational performance and satisfaction with job performance. Qualitative content analysis of interview data revealed that patients generally had an increased understanding of how working memory deficits impaired their daily life and had increased confidence in their ability to remember where they were and how to return.

Summary and Implications: Although this study included a small sample size and lacked a control group, acquired brain injury patients successfully completed training with Cogmed QM and reported improved occupational performance and decreased cognitive failures. Patient?s also described feeling positively about group training and being afforded the opportunity to commune with others struggling with acquired brain injury. Participant revealed that adaptive training more than 3 times per week would not have been feasible, implying that different training schedules for Cogmed should be evaluated in the future. Despite the intense and difficult nature of Cogmed QM, all participants in this study reported that they would recommend the program to others in the same situation.

All forecasters can do is estimate with increasing uncertainty as they project forward through time where a hurricane might go. Don't mistake it for something like Irene's "area of effect," it's actually a zone representing the range of possible paths along which Hurricane Irene's eye (the relatively calm, cloudless point at a hurricane's center) could move. How do forecasters determine the "Cone of Uncertainty"? According to CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen, they run simulations on "some of the fastest computers in the world," which in turn crunch data assembled from radar, satellite and weather balloon scans, reports from ships in the vicinity of the hurricane, airplanes (hot-rod hunters that actually fly into the center of the storm) and weather stations.

"Literally billions of calculations are done with very complex equations to help model the atmosphere into the future," Hennen says. "More than 20 different kinds of models are run - some being more reliable and complex than others - to help forecast the track and intensity of the storm."

Forecast tracks are issued every six hours and take into account the latest data, resulting in the multicolored "spaghetti" lines you sometimes see on TV, detailing the hurricane's possible paths, which in turn help to generate the "Cone of Uncertainty." According to Hennen, Irene's center location 12 hours out is averaging 36 miles in either direction, while at 48 hours out, you're looking at a whopping 100 miles either way.

"This is why meteorologists and emergency managers will constantly preach not to look at the line on the forecast track, but to look at the 'cone'," Hennen says. "If you are inside that area, you could end up in the direct path of the storm."

Rebel forces attack Gaddafi compound (Reuters)

DUBAI (Reuters) ? Libyan rebels battling forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi attacked the gates of his fortified Bab al-Aziziya compound in Tripoli on Tuesday as NATO planes flew low overheard, Arab news channel Al Arabiya reported.

NATO confirmed it had aircraft deployed over Tripoli, but could not confirm it had bombed Gaddafi's compound.

Explosions were heard inside the compound, Arabiya reported, with fighting mostly concentrated on the western side.

"The revolutionaries are trying to get in through the Old Gate on the western side. If they're successful, the fighting will move inside the compound," Muftah Ahmad Othman, a rebel in Tripoli, told the news channel.

Britain's Sky TV also reported that smoke could be seen billowing from the compound following a NATO air strike.

Located in the southern center of Tripoli, the six square km complex is home to Gaddafi's private quarters as well as a military barracks and other installations.

Exclusive: Apple readies cheaper iPhone for growth markets (Reuters)

TAIPEI/HONG KONG (Reuters) ? Apple Inc will release a cheaper iPhone 4 within weeks, jeopardizing profit margins to win lower-end customers from rivals such as Nokia in China and other emerging markets.

Asian suppliers have begun making a lower-cost version of the hot-selling smartphone with a smaller 8-gigabyte flash drive that will arrive around the same time Apple unveils its much-anticipated iPhone 5, two sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

The world's most valuable technology company has long stuck to the higher end of a booming mobile device arena, but is now seeking out new markets to sustain the rip-roaring pace of growth that has enthralled Wall Street.

It is in talks with leading Chinese carriers China Mobile Ltd and China Telecom Corp Ltd, both of which are eager to carry the device that defined the smartphone market when Apple launched it in 2007.

"A lower-priced version of iPhone 4 seems to be a necessary evil at this point in the iPhone adoption cycle, especially in emerging markets where the average income of individuals is much lower," said Channing Smith, co-manager of the Capital Advisors Growth Fund, which owns Apple shares.

Pat Becker, portfolio manager at Becker Capital Management, said Apple is looking to take a chunk of the market that is currently dominated by Finnish rival Nokia Oyj, which is widely expected to release a new phone running on Microsoft Corp's Windows software as early as end of the year.

Nokia dominates the lower end, while Apple has so far focused only on the premium market.

"Your best defense is sometimes your offense," he said.

A cheaper phone risks cannibalizing Apple's premium iPhone model and pressuring margins, but the California company needs one to expand its emerging market share, analysts say.

The flash drive for the 8-GB iPhone 4 is being manufactured by a South Korean company, one of the sources said on Tuesday, declining to name the company. Apple currently sources its flash drives from Japan's Toshiba Corp and South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.

Apple, which demands high levels of secrecy and security from suppliers and employees, would not comment. Samsung also declined comment.

IPHONE 5 BY END-SEPT?

The iPhone 4 was launched June 2010 in black 16-GB and 32-GB versions, with white versions added to the lineup in April. The 8-GB version is expected within weeks, the sources said.

"Apple may want to push into the emerging market segment, where customers want to switch to low- to mid-end smartphones from high-end feature phones, which usually cost $150 to $200," said Yuanta Securities analyst Bonnie Chang.

"But I think for an 8-GB iPhone 4, the price is hard to go below $200, so Apple will still need a completely new phone with low specifications for the emerging markets." An iPhone 4 without contract commitments now costs over $600.

In addition to the launch of the smaller iPhone 4, Apple is targeting an end-September launch for the next-generation iPhone 5, one source said, confirming earlier reports on Apple follower blogsites and industry websites.

The new iPhone -- which some call the iPhone 4S because of its largely identical appearance to the existing iPhone 4 -- will have a bigger touch screen, better antenna and an 8-megapixel camera, one source said.

The iPhone 5's two manufacturers have been told to prepare production capacity for up to 45 million units altogether, the source said. The phone will be made by Hon Hai Precision Industries Co Ltd and Pegatron Corp, the person added.

Apple sold 20.34 million iPhones in the second quarter versus an expected 17 million to 18 million, and is increasingly looking to Asia to boost future results.

Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said in July the company is particularly optimistic about Greater China, in which Apple includes mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

"I firmly believe that we are just scratching the surface right now," Cook said about China. "I think there is an incredible opportunity for China there."

Asia-Pacific -- which accounts for about one-fifth of Apple's total revenue -- and Greater China in particular helped Apple's revenue surge 82 percent to $28.6 billion in April-June.

Overall, Asia-Pacific revenue more than tripled to $6.3 billion in the quarter.
