US-UK security experts unite for London Olympics

LONDON (AP) ? Fighter jets thunder above the English countryside. Missiles stand ready. And Big Brother is watching like never before.

The London Olympics are no ordinary games. Not since World War II have Britain and the United States teamed up for such a massive security operation on British soil.

Hundreds of American intelligence, security and law enforcement officials are flying across the Atlantic for the games that begin July 27. Some will even be embedded with their British counterparts, sharing critical intelligence and troubleshooting potential risks. Dozens of Interpol officers will also be deployed.

The unique collaboration is rooted in common threats the partners have faced since the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the U.S. and Britain's own deadly suicide bombings in 2005.

Britain was America's closest ally in Afghanistan and Iraq, making it a prime target of Islamic terror groups. And dozens of recent terror plots, including the 2006 plot to blow up nearly a dozen trans-Atlantic airliners, have been hatched within Britain's sizeable Muslim population, more than 1 million of whom have ties to Pakistan.

Although other Olympics have taken place since 9/11 ? Salt Lake City, Athens, Turin, Beijing and Vancouver ? London poses a different breed of security challenge.

"I'm confident that there is more than adequate security here for these games," Louis Susman, the U.S. Ambassador to the U.K., told The Associated Press. "That said, we live in a tumultuous world, whether that be in New York or London."

Intelligence officials say there has been an expected increase in chatter among extremist groups but there are still no specific or credible threats to the London games. The terror level is labeled substantial, a notch below severe and what it has been for much of the past decade. A substantial threat level indicates that an attack is a strong possibility.

"There is a perception in some quarters that the terrorist threat to this country has evaporated," said Jonathan Evans, head of Britain's domestic spy agency of MI5. "Bin Laden is dead, al-Qaida's senior leadership in Pakistan is under serious pressure and there hasn't been a major terror attack here for seven years. (But) in back rooms and in cars and on the streets of this country, there is no shortage of individuals talking about wanting to mount terrorist attacks here."

The potential threats to the London games are broad and diverse ? a lone wolf attacker such as Norway's Anders Behring Breivik who confessed to killing 77 people; a possible non-Asian Muslim convert who could slip by security with a European passport; a coordinated strike like the Sept. 11 terror attacks or a debilitating cyber-attack.

Although al-Qaida has been weakened by targeted U.S. strikes, its affiliates in places like Somalia and Yemen have stepped up their activity and increased their capabilities. They've even been working on bombs that can go undetected in airport scans.

British security officials fear that dozens of nationals who went to train in Somalia and elsewhere could eventually return.

"Terrorist problems have a long tail," said Evans. "They very rarely just stop."

Up to 1 million visitors are expected for the games, putting added strain on border security agents at airports like London's Heathrow, which has been criticized for its long lines and lack of staff to screen those arriving from other countries.

On site, some 300,000 people are expected to flow into Olympic Park in east London each day during peak times.

One of the key functions for Interpol, the international police organization, will be to speed intelligence data sharing between countries so threats can be deterred. U.K. officials scan Interpol data 150 million times per year, Interpol Secretary General Ronald K. Noble told the AP during an exclusive interview at the agency's Lyon headquarters.

"The truth is, and we know this from Norway, that you can't identify one ethnic group and say that's the ethnic group that should only concern us," Noble said. "But this Olympics ? from all that I know and based on all the information that Interpol has ? should be a safe Olympics."

Shared intelligence, better technology and boosted resources have allowed security officials to crack organized plots before they happen but the possibility of a self-starter extremist who operates below the radar remains one of the biggest fears.

In the case of Breivik, there were few warning signals that the self-styled anti-Muslim fanatic was about to kill 77 people last summer. The same essentially was true for Mohamed Merah, a Frenchman of Algerian descent who in March killed three paratroopers, a rabbi and three Jewish school children in southwest France.

Security officials say unless people are already known to authorities, they can go virtually undetected as they plan atrocities.

The overall security numbers are staggering. The games will be protected by some 12,000 police officers during peak times and 23,700 security staff ? a number that includes some 13,500 troops on standby, which is more than the 9,500 British troops currently in Afghanistan. A no-fly zone will also be established over Olympic venues from July 14 to August 15.

More than 100,000 people have applied for jobs at Olympics venues, being vetted for employment history and possible criminal backgrounds. The more rigorous checks are done by the government for accreditation to get into the games, according to Ian Horseman Sewell with G4S, a global company providing most of the training and security staff for the Olympics.

Still, Sewell admits London is different than past games.

"London is a proven terrorist target and it is the first time the summer Olympics have been operated in a post 7/7 environment in a place that isn't a totalitarian state," Sewell said, referring to the 2005 suicide bombings in London and the 2008 Beijing games. "From a security perspective, London is breaking new ground."

G4S will also help secure venues outside of the park and protect athletes.

Some specific teams from places like Belarus, Belgium, New Zealand and Vietnam will be training in northern France to keep costs down ? a move that prompted a joint Franco-British security exercise earlier this year.

Protecting athletes has been a concern since a terror attack at the 1972 Olympics in Munich killed 11 Israeli athletes and coaches.

"Israeli athletes will be staying away from the others in a more secluded area and with more security," a senior Israeli intelligence official told the AP, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of his job. "But a repetition of what happened in Munich is considered unlikely because Israel is ready and also because it isn't the kind of attack Palestinians would want now."

Technology has also advanced from past games.

Special Israeli surveillance technology has been rolled out for the Olympics across Britain, a country already known for its 4 million closed-circuit television cameras. Even more cameras have been installed at the Olympic Park.

Advanced facial and image recognition software will be used to identify suspects and connect multiple crime scenes. Cameras will be used to capture suspicious behavior. And special drones will be used for crowd surveillance, according to a salesman at an Israeli company who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

And remember the movie "Speed" where a bomb would allegedly go off if a bus went slower than 50 mph (80 kph)? Hundreds of public transport vehicles and VIP buses being used in the London games have already been equipped so authorities can tell if a driver is acting erratically ? something that might happen in a hijacking.

Authorities will also be able to stop a vehicle remotely or keep it going at a certain speed ? technology that could be useful if a terrorist were carrying explosives and threatening to crash a bus full of athletes into a crowded venue.

The British military has already made headlines with the weapons it will have available ? surface-to-air missiles, RAF Typhoon combat aircraft and an aircraft carrier docked on the Thames, the river that cuts across London close to several Olympic sites.

Security officials had worried that Irish dissidents could target the games, but those fears have dissipated.

Despite the U.S.-U.K. collaboration, there will still be differences in how the London Olympics is policed. Most of the security personnel will be unarmed ? a striking difference to operations in the United States.

Adding to security issues, leaders from around the world will want to visit during the Olympics. The American delegation will be led by first lady Michelle Obama while President Barack Obama focuses on his re-election campaign.

"I've not heard any American who has said they were concerned about security here," said Susman, the ambassador. "London has made an effort to showcase London for the world and I think it's going to be terrific."

The paraglider

The paraglider is an aircraft derived from the parachute, allowing the practice of free flying or paramotor. Nowadays, its use, which is a hobby and a sport, skydiving is independent and is closer to other practices of air sports such as gliding or (very close) hang gliding. The mini paraglider further expands the possibilities of practice.

History

The history of paragliding begins in 1965 with the development of Sailwing by Dave Barish1. He called this new discipline slope soaring (slope soaring). Along with this invention, Domina Jalbert creates a parachute coffered he sees as the replacement for the parabolic parachute: the parafoil. This concept evolves into a free fall but left it to the concepts of paragliding and double surface caissons. Dave Barish and Dan Poynter place between 1966 and 1968 demonstrations of slope soaring on a ski jumping hill, then go on tour in the ski resorts. Some climbers are becoming interested in this practice, seeing it as a quick and efficient way to descend after a ascension. In 1971, Steve Snyder markets in? the United States, the first paraglider under the name boxes Paraplane and it was in 1972 that found the first paraglider of its kind in France Parachuting Championships.

In late 1970 there will be more than what type of sailing in these Championships. In Europe, a Swiss and a German Andreas Kuhn Dieter Strassilla, use a parachute box type ?wing? and transform it by extending the risers, to create ?lift? of skiing, and downhill ?slope soaring?. This is the beginning of paragliding in Europe, Andreas invented a ?speed bar? that with a single attachment point, allowing the driver to always be ?centered? in its veil, taken over by this invention and kitesurfing.

Scientists who search for new pesticides for use in humanity's battle of the bugs and other threats to the food supply have been learning lessons from Mother Nature, according to a new analysis. It concludes that more than two out of every three new pesticide active ingredients approved in recent years had roots in natural substances produced in plants or animals. The article appears in ACS' Journal of Natural Products.

Charles L. Cantrell and colleagues point out that there have been many analyses of the impact of natural products substances produced by living plants, animals and other organisms on the production of pesticides. None, however, has ever looked at the impact of natural products and natural product-based pesticides in fostering new active ingredients (NAIs) in pesticides on the U.S. market, based on NAI registrations with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The scientists filled that information gap with results that they say defy conventional wisdom that natural products may not be the best sources for NAIs.

The analysis found that between 1997 and 2010, more natural products were registered as NAIs for conventional pesticides and biopesticides than any other type of ingredient. The authors report that when biological ingredients and natural products recreated in labs are included, more than 69 percent of all NAIs registered in that time frame have natural origins.

Reminders of mortality increase concern for environmental legacy

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? When we turn on the A/C in the summer, our first thought is probably one of relief. If it's 100 degrees in the shade, we're probably not thinking about how our decision might influence the environmental legacy we leave for future generations. It's not that we don't care, it's just that we typically don't think about our behavior in terms of long-term, inter-generational tradeoffs. But new research suggests that reminders of our own mortality may encourage us to keep future generations in mind as we make decisions.

In a study published in Psychological Science, a publication of the Association for Psychological Science, Kimberly Wade-Benzoni, of Duke University Fuqua School of Business, and her colleagues decided to focus on a kind of problem they call an "intergenerational dilemma," examining whether certain factors might lead the current generation to make sacrifices on behalf of future generations, even when there aren't any material or economic incentives to do so.

When people make decisions, they often focus on rewards in the present at the expense of rewards in the future -- a phenomenon called 'intertemporal discounting.' The hurdle to overcome with intergenerational dilemmas is that they require us to focus on future rewards that will be enjoyed by someone else. These dilemmas are unique because there isn't just a temporal distance between decision-maker and beneficiary, there's a social distance, too.

Wade-Benzoni and her colleagues hypothesized that reminding people of their mortality might be one way to strengthen their connection to future others, activating what the researchers call a 'legacy motivation.' They theorized that thoughts of death might be enough to motivate people to want to leave a positive legacy, even when that legacy spans several generations, effectively overcoming the temporal and social hurdles involved in intergenerational dilemmas. The researchers decided to test their hypothesis in several experiments.

In the first experiment, participants were entered into a lottery, in which they had the chance to win $1000. Some participants were asked to read a newspaper article about an airplane passenger's death in a freak accident -- priming their thoughts of death and mortality -- while others read an emotionally neutral story. All the participants were told that they could designate a portion of their lottery winnings to a charity that serves impoverished communities. Some were told that the donations would serve the needy now, while others were told that their donations would go to the needy at a future date.

The researchers found that those participants who had been primed with thoughts of mortality gave more money to the future-oriented charity than to the present-oriented charity. The findings suggest, in line with the original hypothesis, that thinking about death motivated participants to behave in ways that ensured their personal legacy, leaving their mark by channeling their lottery donations toward needy others in the future.

"Creating a positive legacy offers people a means of symbolic immortality," says Wade-Benzoni. "This psychosocial benefit is powerful enough to overcome very basic human tendencies to discount the value of benefits that will be enjoyed by others in the future."

Wade-Benzoni and her colleagues wanted to know more about the specific factors that drive the relationship between mortality and legacy motivation, so they decided to conduct a second experiment in which they created a hypothetical scenario related to energy and the environment.

Participants were asked to play the role of VP for a large energy company. The company had supposedly discovered a new source of efficient, inexpensive energy, and the participant's task as VP was to decide how much of the energy should be used by the company today versus how much should be allocated to another recipient. Some participants were given the option of donating to another organization that would benefit immediately; some were given the option of donating to another group that would benefit in the future; and some were given the option of donating to their own organization in the future. The participants were told that all of the other beneficiaries would make better use of the new energy supply than thier own company would in the present.

As in the first experiment, some participants were primed with thoughts of mortality, and then all the participants were asked to make their energy allocation. To get at the possible connection to future others, the researchers asked participants whether they felt an affinity with the other group.

Just as they expected, the researchers found that participants who were primed with thoughts of mortality were more likely to allocate the energy toward future beneficiaries. Furthermore, this desire to help future others was related to their sense of connection to the beneficiary.

In light of findings from the well-established literature on intertemporal choice, the behavior demonstrated in these studies under conditions of mortality salience is strikingly counter-intuitive. And that is exactly why this research is important, says Wade-Benzoni -- these new studies examine how people make decisions across both temporal and social distances.

"Acting on the behalf of future generations can paradoxically represent a dramatic form of self-interest -- immortality striving," she explains. "Believing that we have made a difference by leaving a group, an organization, a professional field, or the world a better place helps us to gain a sense of purpose in our lives and buffer the threat of meaninglessness posed by death."

The key to effective environmental policies, then, may be to help citizens see their day-to-day decisions as trade-offs between current and future generations and remind them, subtly, that none of us will live forever. We will all, as Shakespeare put it, shuffle off this mortal coil; the question is what legacy will we leave?

Program, Budget and Finance chair announces hearings structure

[Episcopal News Service] Diane Pollard, the chair of the Episcopal Church?s Joint Standing Committee on Program, Budget and Finance posted the following announcement on the committee?s blog June 24.

?During the past three months, members of the Joint Standing Committee on Program, Budget and Finance have been attending provincial synod meetings in order to present the Draft Budget of the Executive Council. During our presentations we announced the process for conducting hearings at the General Convention. We indicated that two of the three hearings would be conducted in a conversational form ? with individuals seated at round tables and engaging in conversation with members of the PB&F committee. At a recent provincial synod meeting concerns were voiced questioning if this form would satisfy the definition of an open hearing. We have looked into this and decided that all three of the hearings [scheduled for 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. July 4, and 7:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m. July 6 and 7] will be conducted in the form of individual testimony.

?We appreciate the input that has caused us to decide on this change in our process. We hope that all who plan to attend the hearings will come prepared with statements that are clear and concise. Because of time constraints, we anticipate limiting individual comments to two minutes. I look forward to seeing you in Indianapolis.?

Possible details of Google Nexus tablet emerge

11 hrs.

Google I/O, the search engine giant's annual developer conference kicks off on June 27. As usual, things will start with a keynote, which may include some product announcements. One blog claims that it already knows which gadget?Google will show off?? a tablet dubbed "Nexus 7."

Gizmodo Australia's Luke Hopewell writes that?the blog's staff has "viewed a training document detailing exactly what?s going to be in the new tablet and how much it?s going to cost."?

According to Hopewell, the tablet will be a 7-inch device built by Asus ??which fits with earlier reports???and contain a 1.3Ghz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, GeForce 12-core GPU and 1GB of RAM.?The tablet will be come in 8GB and 16 GB versions, Hopewell explains. Its screen will supposedly be an IPS?display "with a 178-degree viewing angle, running a resolution of 1280 by 800." (This again matches a prior report by DigiTimes.)

Additionally, there will supposedly be NFC, Google Wallet, and Android Beam technology built into the device along with a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera. The battery inside the Nexus 7 will offer 9 hours of operating time.

Hopewell writes that the?8GB version of the tablet will cost $199 and that the 16GB version will cost $249.?(Previous reports suggested that prices would range between $149 and $249, for reference.)

While leaks, rumors, and vaguely sourced reports should always be taken with a large dash of salt, there's been a lot of consistency regarding this particular device. We wouldn't be surprised if we saw it in a couple of days, at the Google I/O keynote in San Francisco, from where we'll be reporting live.

The challenge of change initiatives | Ric Willmot Blog

Those in your organisation who are complaining the loudest about your change initiative without regard for the benefits, value and outcomes for everyone might possibly be the ones who are afraid of being ?found out?.

Those in your organisation who are silent and non-commital may not yet be convinced about what you?re telling them in regards to how things will be improved.

This is why change is a challenge. This is why change is difficult.

Change is a process not an event and the change is made by individuals. It?s a highly personal experience for those involved within the organisation and can evoke a multitude of feelings and emotional responses. Because of this more than 70% of change initiatives fail because there wasn?t satisfactory focus on people issues.

The challenge of change initiatives is to create confidence in the hearts and minds of your people.

World Technology ? How Google is teaching computers to see

Google?s Hangouts recognize people, even if they are just a photo.

Google is attempting to teach computers to recognize human faces without telling the computing algorithms which faces are human. It?s a machine learning problem made for this era of unstructured data and easy access to large compute clusters. It could help the search giant make huge strides in building the next big opportunity in tech ? enabling computers to ?see.?

A Google research paper prepared for the upcoming International Machine Learning Conference explains how Google has managed to distinguish human faces with 15.8 percent accuracy using 1,000 machines with 16,000 cores and an image repository.

It also can recognize cats and body parts ? elements chosen because they were so common on the YouTube stills used to create the image database researchers used to train the algorithm. The accuracy may not seem impressive to us ? it identifies roughly 4 out of 25 faces as actual faces ? but it?s a 70 percent improvement over previous efforts.

Google?s Hangouts knows pictures of people from pictures of dogs.

The net result is Google can take thousands of images, clean them up, and then learn how to group similar images into categories such as ?faces? or ?cats.? This has been possible using state-of-the-art systems for a while, but those required tagged images as well as a long learning period. Google?s experiment tried to use unlabeled images and threw a lot of computing at the learning process to reduce the time it took to train the algorithm from weeks to just three days.

Google gets somewhat profound in its paper, noting that if machines can learn like this, perhaps it?s also how humans learn:

This work investigates the feasibility of building high- level features from only unlabeled data. A positive answer to this question will give rise to two significant results. Practically, this provides an inexpensive way to develop features from unlabeled data. But perhaps more importantly, it answers an intriguing question as to whether the specificity of the ?grandmother neuron? could possibly be learned from unlabeled data. Informally, this would suggest that it is at least in principle possible that a baby learns to group faces into one class ?because it has seen many of them and not because it is guided by supervision or rewards.

Understanding the origins of language and how people learn to classify objects is something people are still trying to work out, so Google may be onto something that philosophers and anthropologists can debate in alcohol-fueled conversations at university cafes (or machine learning conferences). But from a practical perspective, throwing a lot of compute at unstructured data to give computers the ability to see could be a gateway for Google to build a platform for the next big thing in tech.

Source: Google

In devices like the Microsoft Kinect, Google Glasses, and other gadgets that use gesture recognition, getting computers to see the world is as complex as getting humans to do so. It?s possible to teach computers to recognize gestures that are preprogrammed into its software. Even some touch-based systems are actually taking advantage of cameras to see and interpret different gestures, but getting a computer to actually ?see? is far more complicated.

People see using their eyes and their brains. Our eyes are sensors detecting gradations in light, dark, color, etc. That information is conveyed to the brain where it is interpreted. The brain plays all sorts of tricks with the actual world, though. It fills in blanks, ignores the mundane and can be tricked via optical illusions.

Computers have cameras and a variety of sensors that can act as eyes, but the brain part is a challenge. To train a computer to ?see,? programmers have to train machines and offer them ways to behave in any given scenario or gesture combination. Google has shown a way to reduce the training time by throwing a ton of computers at the problem and to reduce the specificity related to image recognition by showing that computers could be trained to recognize images if they see enough of them and have enough processing power.

The Google researchers note that its network of computers is one of the largest researchers know of. The Google network has 1 billion trainable parameters, which is more than an order of magnitude larger than other large networks reported in literature that have 10 million parameters. But even the Google network pales in comparison to the human visual cortex, which is a million times larger in terms of the number of neurons and synapses.

But teaching computers to see is huge (especially if, along the way, you teach computers how to learn). Imagine if your smartphone could ?see? an object and then classify it. It then could access the rich trove of data it has about that object ? be it a building, a piece of art or a meal ? and deliver up information to you or an app. Right now we have to enter in that information in many cases using a tiny keypad on a mobile device or snap a picture and rely on a much less robust database of learned visual elements like Google Goggles does. Clearly, there are also privacy concerns, as governments could put the networked compute of a thousand Googles behind their surveillance efforts.

At home, there are entertainment benefits as Kinect-like devices could see and interpret a user?s actions ? not just in the confines of a game ? but in the free-flowing world of everyday television. For example, allowing a child to interact via a Kinect with Sesame Street is something people at Microsoft are trying to develop. On a smartphone or in the home, it?s pretty heady stuff.

Octomom Bikini Photos: Hot or Not?!

As the Nadya Suleman whirlwind media tour continues today with a bunch of photos of her in a pink bikini on a Miami beach, two things are apparent:

  1. Frankie Grageda is one lucky (or unlucky, depending on your taste) man
  2. The pics may be even more desperate than the Octomom porn trailer

Yeah. It's hard to look sexy when you're only doing this to support the 14 kids you had without even having sex and can't provide for, but she tries.

Nadya Suleman Cleavage

Yeah. Kate Upton bikini photos, these are not. To say the least.

Try as she might to show off her toned physique and make us forget what a destitute, attention-seeking, clueless, taxpayer-gouging human she is, it's not cutting it.

Or is it? You tell us! Click to enlarge more hot (or not) Octomom bikini pictures below and share your commentary on them in the comment section:

If it's fine, could I not have to use a picture at all? I usually use text to describe the appearance in place of pictures.

BondingContractors.com ? Blog Archive ? Outfits For Pet dogs ...

We humans commemorate Halloween in a grand old design, and for many of us, it is a thinly veiled pretext for us to let our hair down and really go wild at whatever party we can easily take care of to appeal our way into. Why should our loved buddies be left at home whilst their masters get a kick out of all the fun and glory? With puppy costumes, you will be able to bring your pet along with you and let them enjoy themselves.

In these economically turbulent and volatile times, money is tighter than ever before and so people are having to cut corners and conserve funds wherever and nevertheless they can. With that in mind then, if your dog is a puppy (and therefore, liable to experience a progression spurt sometime in the near future) then you must think of utilizing Costumes For Pets that have Velcro straps.

The major benefit of Velcro straps is that they can effortlessly be scaled up-wards or downwards as the scenarios of the situation could merit and so if your cute little puppy at last reaches full size, that stunning fairy wardrobe is quite possibly going to need some readjusting.

Be cautious about purchasing the very first few costumes for your puppy that you occur to stumble across on the net. The explanation for this is that provided how competitive the market pet costumes happens to be, this means that there is a lot of price competitors out there. Just what this suggests in real terms is that if the customer is shrewd enough to shop around and compare the different clothing that are on sale, they will definitely have the ability to discover the perfect costume that additionally happens to be within their price array.

Human Powered Helicopter Takes Flight [Video]

Last summer a team from the Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland created a human-powered helicopter called Gamera, and managed to get it off the ground for 11 seconds. Not bad. But yesterday their Gamera 2 managed to stay airborne for a solid 50 seconds, smashing the world record. It looks exhausting, but I wanna try. More »

Hands-on with G-Technology's Mac-friendly, USB 3.0-packing G-Drive slim

When we set out to get hands-on with a hard drive, of all things, you can bet we're going to do more than just pick it up and marvel at how lightweight it is. Here at a gdgt event in New York City, we spotted G-Technology's new Mac-friendly USB 3.0 drives on display and immediately got to work running some speed tests on the thinnest of the bunch, the G-Drive slim. Though transfer rates varied, both download and upload speeds tended to hover around 95 MB/s, and that was after ten or so runs in the Blackmagic benchmark. (Next time we'll bring a USB 2.0 cable to test a backward-compatible setup.)

According to a company rep staffing the event, the other drives in the lineup, the G-Drive mini, mobile and mobile USB 3.0, should deliver similar performance. Really, the differences here are in the specs: the G-Drive mobile and mini have FireWire ports, and all three offer more storage (750GB to 1TB, as opposed to 500GB for the slim). Design-wise, all the drives on display here seemed fairly impervious to scratches, and that rubberized band around the edges also makes the devices feel a little less delicate. On that point, you can check out the hands-on photos to see what we're talking about, though you'll just have to take our word on the speed testing.

Zach Honig contributed to this report.
