Nissan adopts 15 EV chargers, is first on nappy duty (video)

Image

Nissan's concerned that Leaf owners aren't getting around enough. So, until IBM's super-batteries arrive or Exxon starts installing charging points in its gas stations, the car maker's got to do it itself. In partnership with charity Adopt-A-Charger, it's paying for 15 charging points in California, three at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and twelve at the Music Concourse in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Customers will have totally free access, with Nissan pledging to pay for the upkeep and electricity that the public uses. After the break we've got a video whose narrator probably makes Chris Hansen jealous of his voice.

Why Having The Best Web Site Host Makes A Difference | Online ...

?

Every person who is looking to build a website needs to have a website host. Website hosts and websites go hand in hand as without a website host, you cannot host a website. However, due to increasing competition, there are many companies that provide hosting services, which makes it essential for everyone who is looking to host a website to be careful and consider many things before making the final decision. There are many benefits that a good website host can provide you with.

Firstly, there are some things that you need to look for in a website host. These things will make your website run smoothly. For instance, if you did not get the Fantastico script along with your hosting to run your blog, you will definitely overlook the top most blogging platforms such as Joomla hosting and WordPress. This will be disadvantageous for you so you should carefully assess the features that you need in you package.

Secondly, the best website host or a good website host provides you with enough space for hosting your website that you won?t have to worry about your site lagging due to increased traffic. Visitors will immediately leave your site and look for a better option if they find your loads and hosting slow. Moreover, lack of space will create problems for not only you but also your visitors, so it is always better to opt for a website host that provides you with greater space, more than your requirements.

Another thing you should put into consideration is customer support. Customer support is necessary when it comes to website hosts in case your website goes down. There are many companies that claim to provide top customer support services but in actuality, they are making these claims in vain. You can also double check the customer support service of a website host by giving them a call or emailing them. Finding the right and best hosting company will enable you to turn into a very successful entity on the internet. With so much competition, being successful on the web is not easy which is why things such as a good web host and others, that will determine the fate of your website, should be carefully thought and selected.

Moreover, before selecting the web host provider, you should do some careful research on the internet. There are many websites on the internet that provide excellent reviews about different web hosting companies. You should make sure that you look into these reviews to assure you are making the best choice for your company and website. Choosing a bad website host won?t end the world because you can always switch over but switching over to another web host is a daunting task. Therefore, it is advisable to make the right choice the first time. By putting careful considerations into account, you should then move ahead with the final decision about the web host company you are going to select for your website.

Global warming mystery: Some Himalayan glaciers getting bigger

The Himalayan glaciers are the planet's largest bodies of ice outside the polar caps. New research shows some Himalayan glaciers got bigger between 1999-2008.

Some glaciers in the Himalayas mountain range have gained a small amount of mass between 1999 and 2008, new research shows, bucking the global trend of glacial decline.

The study published on Sunday in the Nature Geoscience journal also said the Karakoram mountain range in the Himalayas has contributed less to sea level rise than previously thought.

With global average temperature rising, glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets melt and shed water, which contributes to the increase of sea levels, threatening the populations of low-lying nations and islands.

IN PICTURES: Disappearing Glaciers

The research at France's University of Grenoble estimates that the Karakoram glaciers have gained around 0.11 to 0.22 metres (0.36 feet to 0.72 feet) per year between 1999 and 2008.

"Our conclusion that Karakoram glaciers had a small mass gain at the beginning of the 21st century indicates that those central/eastern glaciers are not representative of the whole (Himalayas)," the experts at the university said.

The study appears to confirm earlier research that had suggested the Karakoram glaciers have not followed the global trend of glacial decline over the past three decades. The mountain range's remoteness had made it hard to confirm its behavior.

The Karakoram mountain range spans the borders between India, China, and Pakistan and is covered by 19,950 square kilometers (7,702 square miles) of glaciers. It is home to the second highest mountain in the world, K2.

"We suggest that the sea-level-rise contribution for this region during the first decade of the 21st century should be revised from +0.04 mm per year to -0.006 mm per year sea-level equivalent," the study said.

MELTING ICE

The Himalayas hold the planet's largest body of ice outside the polar caps and feed many of the world's great rivers, including the Ganges and Brahmaputra, on which hundreds of millions of people depend.

The world's glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets have shed around 4,200 cubic kilometres (1,007 cubic miles) from 2003 to 2010, experts suggest, which is enough to raise sea levels by 12mm over that period.

Stephan Harrison, associate professor in quaternary science at the UK's University of Exeter, said the new research had showed there is "considerable variability" in the global climate and in how glaciers respond to it.

The Karakoram glaciers are also unusual because they are covered with thick layers of rock debris, which means their patterns of melting and mass gain are driven by changes in that debris as well as in the climate.

Much of their mass gain also comes from avalanches from the high mountains surrounding them, Harrison said.

"Overall, the impact of melting glaciers such as these on sea level rise is known to be negligible, but it does mean that there is much more to be learned about exactly how the world's glaciers will respond to continued global warming," he added.

A separate study in February found that Himalayan glaciers and ice caps as a whole were losing mass less quickly than once feared, offering some respite to a region already feeling the effects of global warming. (Editing by Alessandra Rizzo)

Thousands of comets orbiting new star collide every day, create visible debris ring

Comets, perhaps over 80 trillion, circle a young star that houses one alien planet and maybe more. There are thousands of daily comet collisions in the star's orbit.

A young star that is home to at least one alien planet is also ringed by a vast, dusty cloud of comets, like our own solar system. But there's a big difference: There may be as many as 83 trillion comets there, with collisions destroying thousands each day, a new study suggests.

In fact, there is so much dust around the star that the equivalent of 2,000 comets, each a half-mile (1 kilometer) wide, would have to have been obliterated every day to create the icy dust belt seen today, researchers say. In an announcement of the discovery, European Space Agency officials dubbed the demolition derby a "comet massacre."

The dust also could have been created by few crashes of larger comets? ? ?perhaps just two collisions every day between comets 6 miles across (10 km)? ? ?but that's still a mind-boggling statistic, they added.

"I was really surprised," study leader Bram Acke of the University of Leuven in Belgium said in a statement. "To me this was an extremely large number."

An extrasolar Kuiper belt

The crashing comets encircle the star Fomalhaut about 25 light-years from Earth. Acke and his colleagues studied the comet belt with the European Space Agency's far-infrared Herschel space observatory, which spotted the telltale dust created by the constant collisions of comets in motion, the researchers said. [Latest photos from Herschel observatory]

Depending on comets' sizes, there could be between 260 billion and 83 trillion comets in the dust belt around the star, the researchers found. If you combined the amount of material in Fomalhaut's dust belt, the mass ?would be the equivalent of 110 Earths, they added.

Fomalhaut's comet belt arrangement is similar to the Kuiper belt of icy objects beyond the orbit of Neptune in our own solar system. Scientists have known about a dust cloud surrounding Fomalhaut since the 1980s, though now the Herschel observatory has revealed the ring in greater detail than ever before.

Past observations by the Hubble Space Telescope suggested the particles that make up Fomalhaut's dust belt were fairly large. But that theory was at odds with the Herschel observatory's temperature readings of the belt.

Cosmic comet crashes

Herschel observations found that the dust belt's temperature ranges between minus 382 and minus 274 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 230 and minus 170 degrees Celsius) on average. That would correspond to tiny dust particles, each a few millionths of a meter wide, researchers explained.

The starlight from Fomalhaut would normally sweep such tiny dust particles away, yet they persist, which led Acke and his colleagues to deduce that a fresh supply of dust is coming from comet collisions.

"Since we do observe emission from dust in the disc, this blow-out effect must be compensated by a steady production of dust particles via comet collisions," co-author Carsten Dominik of the University of Amsterdam and Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen said in a statement.

One side of Fomalhaut's dust belt is warmer than the other because it is off-center, possibly due to the gravitational influence of a planet. A planet was confirmed to be orbiting the starby the Hubble Space Telescope in 2005.

Formalhaut is a relatively young star, only a few million years old, researchers said. It is about twice as massive as Earth's sun.

The Herschel space observatory is the largest and most powerful infrared space telescope in orbit today. The European Space Agency launched the infrared observatory in 2009.

Grow Strong, Live Long: Fitness Secrets From The Experts

by fit4life on April 16, 2012

Try to keep an even speed when you are riding your bike to work. If you stay within this zone, you can go further without fatigue, and also reduce your chance of injury. The equation for figuring out your rpms is; count how many times the leg on your right side rises in 10 seconds, and times that number by 6. This is the rpm range that you need to strive for.

Do at least a little exercise every single day. Packing your day with none fitness related activities, and leaving no time for a workout, won?t improve your fitness levels. Down time during the day are the best times to which you can incorporate fitness activities.

If you smoke, you can improve your health and avoid dying prematurely by quitting immediately. You are not too old to quit smoking. Quitting can reduce your risk of having a heart attack and help you live longer. When you quit smoking, you show that you care about yourself.

When you want quicker muscle tissue repair after you have had a strenuous workout, you may want to work those same groups of muscles the very next day. Blood flow will be targeted at these muscles, allowing for quicker repair.

Implement a particular order for your exercise routine. Save machines for the end and use dumbbells and barbells first. It is advised that when using dumbbells, smaller muscles experience fatigue before larger muscle groups. When muscles get worked, it is best to switch to working out with machines since they do not rely as much on the stabilizer, or smaller, muscle groups.

Those that are serious about fitness will take advantage of every opportunity to be more physically active. With these tips, you can create a weight loss plan and accomplish your goals.

If you are having a hard time to get started on your diet plan, there are specific actions that you can take to turn it into a habit! You can learn how to get fit and be happier.

Rebates to cut price of $60 LED bulb

NEW YORK (AP) ? How much would you pay for an amazing, state-of-the-art light bulb? Shoppers will be asking themselves that very question at Home Depot and other outlets starting Sunday ? Earth Day ? when the bulb that won a $10 million government contest goes on sale.

The bulb is the most energy-efficient yet, lasts about 20 years and is supposed to give off a pleasing, natural-looking light. But what separates it from the pack most is the price: $60.

That price reflects the cost of the components, especially the top-notch chips, or diodes, that give off the light, and is the price commercial customers will pay. But the manufacturer, Netherlands-based Philips, is discounting it right away to $50 for consumers, and working on deals with electric utilities to discount it even further, by as much as $20 to $30.

This means the bulb will cost anywhere from $20 to $60, depending on where it's found. Online, consumers will be paying $50 for each bulb, because utilities don't subsidize online sales.

Congress launched the L Prize contest in 2007, with the goal of creating a bulb to replace the standard, energy-wasting "incandescent" 60-watt bulb. The requirements were rigorous, and Philips was the only entrant. Its bulb was declared the winner last year, after a year and a half of testing. The contest stipulated that the winning bulb be sold for $22 in its first year on the market.

In that context, the $60 price tag has raised some eyebrows. Ed Crawford, the head of Philips' U.S. lighting division, said it was always part of the plan to have utility rebates bring the price down to the $22 range.

Utilities already offer rebates on energy-saving products such as compact-fluorescent bulbs, or CFLs. In return for efforts to curb energy use, regulators allow utilities to raise their rates. The discounts are invisible to consumers ? the utilities pay the stores directly.

For $25, or even $35, the bulb looks like a good investment compared to an incandescent bulb. It uses only 10 watts of power, meaning saves about $8 per year in electricity if it's used four hours a day. It's expected to last at least 30,000 hours, or 30 times longer than an incandescent. At four hours per day, that's 20 years.

But the Philips bulb is not only up against $1 incandescent bulbs. CFL are nearly as energy efficient. They use about 15 watts for 60 watts worth of light. They're much cheaper too, typically costing around $5. The Philips bulb looks odd too ?the light-emitting surfaces are yellow when the bulb isn't lit, yet shine white when it is.

The Philips bulb has some advantages over a CFL: It lasts three times longer and gives off a more natural-looking light. It doesn't contain the toxic mercury vapor inside CFLs, which creates a minor hazard when they break.

Philips has been selling a cheaper, less efficient version of the L Prize bulb since 2010, and Crawford says it's done well ? LEDs now account for about 20 percent of Philips' U.S. lighting sales, up from nearly zero three years ago.

Crawford credits the L Prize with pushing the company to focus research efforts on LED bulbs. The finished product may be expensive, but the technology the company developed for the prize submission has already been used successfully in its cheaper AmbientLED lights.

"It's the question we always receive: 'Well gee, wouldn't the technology have developed this way without the L Prize?' I think it absolutely would have. The real question is: 'How quickly would it have happened?'" Crawford said.

The company is three to five years ahead of where it would have been without the goading of the prize, he said.

The race is now on to produce LED bulbs that produce 100 watts worth of light. The incandescent equivalents are no longer made or imported, victims of a federal ban that kicked in at the beginning of the year. They're now starting to disappear from store shelves. Squeezing enough LEDs into a bulb-sized space to produce that much light is a big technical challenge ? LEDs generate heat, which destroys them over time unless they're well-cooled.

Incandescent bulbs of 40 watts and above will be banned in 2014.

Rihanna To Make Third Appearance On 'Saturday Night Live'

'We Found Love' singer will be the musical guest on the May 5 episode, hosted by Eli Manning.
By John Mitchell

Rihanna will hit the "Saturday Night Live" stage for the third time when she performs on the legendary sketch comedy show on May 5. New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning will host.

The pop star has a long history with the show and has always been a standout guest. While she always nails it on stage for her musical performance, Rihanna also tends to pop up throughout the show to flex her comedy muscles in sketches and, most notably, in rumored-to-be-departing Andy Samberg's buzzed-about digital shorts.

Her first "Shy Ronnie" short landed an Emmy nomination and she reprised the role for another digital short over Halloween weekend in 2010, playing Clyde to Shy Ronnie's Bonnie as the unlikely couple holds up a bank and Ronnie's bashful nature causes their plan to go array.

For all intents and purposes, Rihanna's appearance is to promote both her album Talk That Talk and her film debut in the upcoming "Battleship," but for those still keeping an eye on the happenings of Ri Ri and ex Chris Brown, it's worth noting that May 5 is also Brown's birthday, so get ready for plenty of "will Chris Brown show up for a surprise appearance" speculation.

The gig will be Manning's first time hosting, though he made a brief cameo when his brother, Peyton, hosted in 2007.

Are you excited for Rihanna's "SNL" return? Do you think Chris Brown will show up with some "Birthday Cake"? Let us know in the comments below!

Sony NEX-FS700 cinema camera hands-on (video)

http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/15/sony-nex-fs700-hands-on/

Sony's otherwise dull pre-NAB press conference yielded one gem -- the NEX-FS700 cinema camera -- which the company announced earlier this month. The FS700 doesn't include 4K shooting functionality out of the box, but it is 4K capable, with the appropriate software coming later in the form of a firmware update. The camera includes the familiar Sony E-mount, bringing with it compatibility with interchangeable lenses, including the standard 18-200mm lens attached to the demo camera at today's event. There's also a trio of ND filters on board -- 1/64ND, 1/16ND and 1/4ND -- along with some impressive slow-motion capabilities, ranging from 120 to 240 frames-per-second in 1080p, going all the way up to 960fps if you're willing to sacrifice full-HD resolution. Company reps confirmed that the camera is expected to retail for "under $10,000" when it hits the market in June, while that 4K update should hit before the year is out, once Sony's external recorder becomes available. The body itself looks very similar to its predecessor, the NEX-FS100, and is lightweight enough for comfortable handheld shooting. Jump past the break for a closer look live from Las Vegas, with Sony Senior Vice President Alec Shapiro.

Amazing photo: Cargo vehicle docks with space station over Earth's city lights (+video)

Last week astronauts delivered an incredible image of a robotic cargo vehicle docking with the International Space Station.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station captured an extraordinary photo of an unmanned European cargo ship as it docked to the orbiting outpost last week.

Skip to next paragraph The International Space Station video update for April 9, 2012.

The European Space Agency's third Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV-3) launched into orbit on March 23, and arrived at the space station five days later, on March 28. The robotic cargo ship delivered about 7 tons of supplies, including water, oxygen, food, clothing, experiments and propellant.

The robotic ATV vehicles are designed to automatically dock to the space station. In this photo, the ATV-3 is approaching its parking spot at the Zvezda service module on the Russian segment of the orbiting complex.

The photo shows the ATV-3's distinctive x-wing solar arrays bathed in light from the spacecraft's sophisticated laser guidance system. The starry night sky and the glow of lights from Earth below make up the remarkable backdrop, as the two vehicles fly 240 miles (386 kilometers) above the planet.

American astronaut Don Pettit shared a version of the docking photo on Twitter the following day.

"ATV docks, breathing fire and bringing good stuff," Pettit wrote under the name @astro_Pettit.

?The cylindrical spacecraft is 35 feet (10.7 meters) long and 14.7 feet (4.5 meters) wide. The 13-ton cargo freighter is disposable and will remain attached to the space station for up to six months before it is loaded with garbage and sent to deliberately burn up as it re-enters Earth's atmosphere.

While NASA reported a power issue on the ATV-3 last weekend and a communications glitch on Thursday (April 5), both issues have since been resolved, and all systems are functioning normally, agency officials confirmed.

The European ATV vehicles are typically named after prominent historical figures in astronomy or space exploration. The ATV-3 is named "Edoardo Amaldi," after the famed Italian physicist who helped create the European Space Agency.

Open Office Hours With TechCrunch Europe

officeHours1Doing meetups and attending conferences is great for uncovering new startups and entrepreneurs, but sometimes you just want to sit down over coffee for a few minutes and explain what you're doing. So I'm starting a new series of one-to-one sessions which will hopefully be fairly regular (schedule allowing). I'll be doing "Open Office Hours" sessions at various locations associated with startups, and as I'm based in London that's where I'll mainly be doing them. The idea is you apply for a slot and wait for confirmation. This isn't about long meetings, it's more about getting a quick heads-up and then following up later. Next week I'll be at startup space White Bear Yard, home to Passion Capital and a number of their startups. You can sign up for a slot here (April 16). The next session after that will be at Innovation Warehouse, slots here (May 1st), and after that at Campus London, sign up here (June 11). To follow other sessions, here's my OHours profile or follow me on Twitter, Facebook or Google+.

Facebook Offers starts rolling out, spamming your news feed with coupons
When Facebook first announced Offers you we're probably wondering if there was even room for yet another coupon service. Between Google, Groupon, Yelp, Living Social and countless others we're not entirely sure there's a niche left untapped for Facebook, but that isn't going to stop Zuck and crew from trying. The service is officially rolling out as we speak, and offering its wares to any business with a Facebook page, regardless of size. The hope is that it'll catch on with smaller businesses in particular, which will now have an easy way to place deals directly into user's news feeds. Of course, after the failure of Facebook Deals, you'd be forgiven for assuming this experiment is doomed from moment one. Check out the video after the break and the source link for more details.
