Sinead O'Connor 'handed crack on wedding night and Barry Herridge was frightened'

By Alanah Eriksen

Last updated at 8:34 AM on 30th December 2011

Sinead O'Connor has spoken about being handed Class A drugs after taking her new drug-counsellor husband on a marijuana hunt on their wedding night.

The Irish singer says her fourth marriage was in trouble from the start and the wild search on the mean streets of Las Vegas led to their eventual split 16 days later.

The 45-year-old insists she still loves Barry Herridge, 38, but says she ended their relationship on Christmas Eve because of the pain he was in.

The couple met online four months ago after Barry responded to a plea by unlucky-in-love Sinead asking for potential suitors to come forward.

They married on December 8 in a quickie wedding at the famous Little White Chapel in the Nevada state.

?

Sinead told The Sun that she took him on a search for cannabis afterwards.

'We ended up in a cab in some place that was quite dangerous.

'I wasn't scared ? but he's a drugs counsellor. What was I thinking?

'Then I was handed a load of crack. Barry was very frightened ? that kind of messed everything up a bit really.'

The purchase or possession of cannabis is an offence in Nevada, subject to a fine of up to $600 for a first offence.

But far more serious might be the repercussions for the Glenageary-born singer?s music career.

For the U.S. authorities routinely refuse travel and work visas to those who have committed ?crimes of moral turpitude?.

These crimes include ?a violation (or conspiracy or attempt to violate) any law or regulations of a State, the United States or a foreign country relating to a controlled substance'.

In 1992, Miss O?Connor appeared to advocate marijuana smoking and in a 1999 Irish Times interview, she admitted to smoking ?weed?, saying: ?I do not take drugs ? I smoke a little weed now and again, which I told the social workers and they laughed.

?I do not take drink or any other drugs. Everybody knows that.?

The mother-of-four said the marriage was also sabotaged early on by the 'interference of certain people'.

'It felt like I was living in a coffin. It was going to be a coffin for both of us and I saw him crushed.

'The whole reason I ended it was out of respect and love for the man.'

The Nothing Compares 2 U singer says she will never marry again and may not even date anyone.

Sinead this week emerged from her home looking tired, stressed and grey-haired.

Gone was the pretty pink frock from her wedding - and instead she came to the door in nothing but a towel before hurriedly changing into a T-shirt and jeans.

'I love him very much': The singer made the announcement on her website, revealing the couple only lived together for 7 days

'I love him very much': The singer made the announcement on her website, revealing the couple only lived together for 7 days

The singer announced on Boxing Day that her 'dream' fourth marriage had ended after just 16 days.

She said on her website that the marriage was in trouble just three hours after the Las Vegas ceremony, when people close to her husband tried to ?kybosh? it.

Sin?ad posted a statement on her website stating that she had decided to end the marriage after just seven days of domesticity.

She wrote: ?There was intense pressure placed upon him by certain people in his life, not to be involved with me. These were people who had never met me but had formed opinions of me based on what they read about ?Sin?ad O?Connor? in the media, etc?.

But she admitted that her husband had also been very upset by a ?wild ride? they took to try and buy marijuana on their wedding night, as she doesn?t drink alcohol.?

Legally binding: A spokesperson for the Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas confirmed that the couple would have to take legal action to dissolve the wedding

But despite its apparent spontaneity, the couple will now have to wait four years to legally end their brief union.

The Little White Wedding chapel confirmed to the Mail that the marriage certificate the couple signed was a legally binding contract.

?Basically, once the couple have consummated the marriage it is not easy to have it annulled.?

The wedding to Mr Herridge was to be the fairy-tale ending to the singer?s search for love, which she launched last summer across Twitter and on The Late Late Show, even attending the annual matchmaking festival in Lisdoonvarna, Co. Clare.

Then the singer shocked the nation by writing a series of candid blogs on her website, detailing what she was looking for in a man.

Loves: O'Connor married friend musician Steve Cooney last year

Another love: O'Connor married musician Steve Cooney last year

Exes: Sinea's ex-husbands Nick Sommerlad and John Reynolds

Exes: Sinead's first husband was to music producer John Reynolds

She wrote in September that she was in ?desperate need of a very sweet, sex-starved man,? but specified that he ?must be no younger than 44, must not be named Brian or Nigel, must be blind enough to think I?m gorgeous, has to be employed and he has to like his mother.?

Inundated with thousands of replies, Miss O?Connor selected just one man to go on a date with ? her future husband.

Another big love: Although Sinead and Frank Bonadio were only together for just over a year, they had a child together, son Yeshua

Split: She had a child with Frank Bonadio

?Barry sent me this wonderful email, which just took my heart away. It had to be him,? said the mother of four.

Originally from Donaghmede, north Dublin, but now living in nearby Raheny, Mr Herridge revealed the contents of the email that kickstarted the relationship.

?I was getting off a train at Connolly Station one morning when I saw this woman acting strangely on the platform. At first I didn?t know what she was doing and then I realised she was playing hopscotch. It wasn?t Sin?ad but a businesswoman in a suit and in her 30s, just having a bit of fun.?

He added: ?I wondered why more women that age weren?t doing the same thing. And it struck me that this was exactly what Sin?ad was doing with her search for love, having fun, and I told Sin?ad about this woman in my first email.?

The story struck a chord with Miss O?Connor, who invited the paediatric psychotherapist out on a date last August. A coffee shop on Dublin?s South William Street was the setting for their first face-to-face meeting and it was love at first sight.

On December 7, the couple announced their intention to marry, using the Today FM Breakfast Show to get the happy news out to the nation.

The singer kept the happy news quiet when she appeared on the Ian Dempsey programme the previous day, telling him she had no gossip to share. But Barry rang the show on Wednesday morning to let the cat out of the bag

Steve King: President Ron Paul Would Be 'Dangerous'

Iowa Rep. Steve King?s said Thursday that Rep. Ron Paul, one of the two co-frontrunners going into his state?s caucuses next week, is ?not dangerous unless he?s president.?

King told Politico that he thinks Paul?s supporters are uninformed, especially about his take on international affairs.

?I don?t think that the Paul supporters have really stepped back and thought about what would happen if Ron Paul were operating out of the Oval Office and the commander-in-chief of our armed forces,? King said.

Paul?s plan to pull all American troops back home would ?actually alter the course of the United States? destiny irreparably and in perpetuity.?

?If he wins here in Iowa, it means something,? King said. ?It means that organization matters and it means that Ron Paul has tapped into a political movement I don?t know that he has generated or is necessarily the exclusive leader of it, but it would mean that he?s tapped into a political movement that is isolationist in its nature and more libertarian than my instincts take me.?

Verizon looking into reports of 4G network problem (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Verizon Wireless is investigating reports that some customers were experiencing trouble accessing its fourth generation (4G) network, a spokesman told Reuters, as the company yet again had to face service problems with its faster wireless service.

Verizon customers around the United States are reporting widespread outages of the company's 4G wireless service, as well as spotty performance of the older 3G service, the Los Angeles Times said on its website.

Verizon Wireless spokesman Marquett Smith told Reuters that the company is investigating reports of network problems.

"The network continues to operate and all customers continue to be able to make calls, send text messages and utilize data services. 3G devices are operating normally," Smith said.

On December 8, a problem prevented some U.S. customers from accessing the Internet on their wireless devices for about 24 hours and again on December 21, the company had to fix a data service problem.

Verizon Wireless is owned by Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc.

Euro weakens broadly; S&P 500 erases 2011 gains (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The euro weakened about 1 percent against the dollar and the yen on Wednesday, one day before an important auction of long-dated Italian debt, while U.S. stocks slid more than 1 percent on concerns about the economy in early 2012.

The European single currency hit a fresh 11-month low against the dollar of $1.291 and a 10-year low against the yen as data showed banks were hoarding the cash recently injected by the European Central Bank rather than lending it out - a bad omen for the European economy in 2012.

"If European banks are still this concerned, it's not a good sign," said Karl Schamotta, senior markets strategist with Western Union Business Solutions. "That underlines the possibility that this liquidity crunch is getting worse and will continue into the new year.

A strong sale of short-term bonds by Italy Wednesday morning initially brought some relief to European markets, but concerns about Thursday's more challenging auction eventually contributed to the weakness of the euro.

U.S. stock indexes fell more than 1 percent in thin trading as investors feared what many expect to be a tough start to the year. The broad S&P 500 index erased its 2011 gains after just turning positive in last week's rally.

"It seems like the weakness in euro, breaking that $1.30 level, really made investors push that 'sell' button," said Ryan Detrick, senior technical strategist with Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati, Ohio.

"But it's somewhat of an exaggerated move, considering that there isn't much volume, and this could end in a one-day selloff."

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) closed down 139.94 points, or 1.14 percent, at 12,151.41, while the Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) lost 15.79 points, or 1.25 percent, to 1,249.64. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) fell 35.22 points, or 1.34 percent, to 2,589.98.

Wall Street's decline weighed on European stocks, which erased early gains. The FTSEurofirst 300 (.FTEU3) index of top European shares fell 0.71 percent to end at 983.32, after rising as much as 0.63 percent earlier in the session.

The MSCI All-Country World index (.MIWD00000PUS) lost 1.34 percent, taking losses for the year to more than 10 percent.

The decline in stocks lifted prices of U.S. government bonds. Benchmark 10-year Treasuries rose 22/32 in price, with the yield at 1.925 percent - below the psychologically significant 2 percent level.

ITALIAN AUCTIONS

The euro slid to a session low of $1.291, its lowest since January, as investors worried about Italy's sale of 8.5 billion euros worth of debt with maturities of up to 10 years on Thursday. It last traded 1.0 percent weaker at $1.2937.

Against the yen, the euro hit its lowest level since June 2001 at 100.70.

Earlier, the single currency briefly rose against the dollar after Italy's short-term debt costs halved at an auction, helped by a new government austerity package and cheap liquidity from the European Central Bank.

However, Italy will need greater commitment from international investors to sell its bonds on Thursday.

"Tomorrow's auction is more important and will give more insight into general sentiment. Today was a warm-up," said Neil Mellor, currency strategist at Bank of New York Mellon.

U.S. crude oil prices fell $1.98 to settle at $99.36 a barrel. They had gained more than one dollar in the previous session following Iran's threat to stop oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz if Western countries impose new sanctions on its exports.

Tehran faces the prospect of further sanctions from the European Union by the end of January over its nuclear ambitions. Washington said it saw "an element of bluster" in the threat to close the Gulf, and the U.S. Fifth Fleet said it would not allow any disruption in the world's most important oil route.

"The threat by Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz supported the oil market yesterday, but the effect is fading today as it will probably be empty threats as they cannot stop the flow for a longer period due to the amount of U.S. hardware in the area," said Thorbjoern bak Jensen, oil analyst with Global Risk Management.

China Tainted Milk: Mildewed Feed Behind Cancer-Causing Toxin ...

BEIJING -- Mildewed feed given to cows caused the high levels of a cancer-causing toxin found in milk from China's biggest dairy company and a smaller one, according to a government safety agency investigating the troubled dairy industry's latest scandal.

An expert review identified the mildewed feed as the cause of the excessive levels of aflatoxin in milk from industry giant Mengniu Dairy Group and the Fujian Changfu Dairy Industry Group, the quality supervision and inspection agency said in a statement posted on its website late Monday.

The agency ordered the dairies to destroy the tainted products, and it advised the public that the contamination will end once the cows stop eating the rotten feed.

Aflatoxin is produced by a fungus that commonly grows on grain and legume crops such as peanuts, soybeans, corn and wheat. The toxin turns up in the milk of animals that eat affected crops.

Though at low doses it is not considered harmful to humans, high doses are linked to cancer, especially in the liver.

Both Mengniu and Changfu have issued public apologies. Mengniu said that the tainted products were produced at a subsidiary in Sichuan province and none had entered the market. Changfu said it recalled the affected products immediately after inspectors told the company.

While once a rarity in the Chinese diet, dairy has become a staple as incomes have risen, and the industry's booming growth has been accompanied by persistent quality issues. In the worst scandal, at least six infants died and 300,000 children were sickened in 2008 from drinking infant formula and milk products made with melamine, an industrial chemical that was being added to watered-down milk to elevate protein levels in quality tests.

Self-rated health in relation to rape and mental health disorders in a national sample of college women.

Source

Department of Psychology, Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina 29634, USA. hzinzow@clemson.edu

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

The purpose of this study was to employ a multivariate approach to examine the correlates of self-rated health in a college sample of women, with particular emphasis on sexual assault history and related mental health outcomes.

PARTICIPANTS:

A national sample of 2,000 female college students participated in a structured phone interview between January and June 2006.

METHODS:

Interview modules assessed demographics, posttraumatic stress disorder, major depressive episode, substance use, rape experiences, and physical health.

RESULTS:

Logistic regression analyses showed that poor self-rated health was associated with low income (odds ratio [OR] = 2.70), lifetime posttraumatic stress disorder (OR = 2.47), lifetime major depressive episode (OR = 2.56), past year illicit drug use (OR = 2.48), and multiple rape history (OR = 2.25).

CONCLUSIONS:

These findings highlight the need for university mental health and medical service providers to assess for rape history, and to diagnose and treat related psychiatric problems in order to reduce physical morbidity.

Xbox live unveils latest cable challenge (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Microsoft is the latest technology giant to storm cable's barricades.

The company is unveiling overhauls to its Xbox 360 console and Xbox Live online arm this week -- a facelift that will bring with it a slew of new entertainment partners and an improved voice-activated control system.

Or as Xbox's slightly grandiloquent ads promise: "TV is becoming more amazing."

The update goes live on Tuesday.

The new look and features will allow users to access Epix, YouTube, HBO Go and others from their consoles or from Xbox's online service.

These new offerings complement Hulu Plus, Zune and Netflix, which are already available to the service's members via apps.

Television channels and video-on-demand offerings will be provided through Verizon FiOS and Comcast.

Not everything will be immediately available and the rollout of new content partners will take place in stages over the next month and into 2012. Among the content providers that will go live with the launch of the service are Hulu Plus, ESPN, Netflix , MSNBC Today and EPIX.

Microsoft's Bing search engine will be integrated into the platform. Users will be able to search for content through voice commands and hand gestures thanks to Kinetic, Microsoft's answer to Apple's Siri.

Not that everything comes free. In addition to a $60 gold membership to Xbox Live, users will have to pay cable providers for access to the various channels.

That makes Xbox less of a cable killer and more of a potential new revenue stream.

Accuser's lawyers: Sandusky account 'unconvincing' (AP)

NEW YORK ? Former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky maintains he never sexually abused children and portrays himself in a New York Times interview as a father-like figure to the kids in his life.

The Times reported Saturday that Sandusky also insisted he never spoke with Joe Paterno about any allegations of misconduct.

"They've taken everything that I ever did for any young person and twisted it to say that my motives were sexual or whatever," Sandusky said. "I had kid after kid after kid who might say I was a father figure. And they just twisted that all."

Sandusky has been charged with 40 counts of molesting eight boys over 15 years and is free on bail while awaiting a preliminary hearing Dec. 13. A grand jury investigating Sandusky said in a report that some of the assaults occurred in the Penn State football showers, including a 2002 allegation in which a graduate assistant testified he saw Sandusky sodomizing a young boy.

University trustees fired Paterno ? major college football's winningest coach ? on Nov. 9, four days after charges were filed against Sandusky, amid mounting criticism that school leaders should have done more when allegations came to their attention.

During a lengthy interview with The Times at his lawyer's home, Sandusky painted a picture of chaotic but friendly scenes involving children he described as extended family at his State College, Pa., home. There were sleepovers, wrestling matches, and children playing with dogs at the house after football games.

The descriptions sharply contrast with the shocking allegations involving children outlined in the grand jury report, including oral and anal sex. One accusation, from 2000, describes a janitor walking into the assistant coaches' shower room and seeing Sandusky holding a boy "up against the wall and licking on him."

Three attorneys representing one of the alleged victims released a statement Saturday, with attorney Andrew Shubin calling Sandusky's comments "an entirely unconvincing denial and a series of bizarre explanations."

Sandusky told the newspaper he and Paterno never spoke about the alleged 2002 incident or a 1998 child molestation complaint investigated by Penn State campus police.

"I never talked to him about either one," Sandusky said. "That's all I can say. I mean, I don't know." He worked for Paterno for nearly 30 years.

Messages left Saturday by The Associated Press seeking comment from representatives for Paterno were not immediately returned.

Paterno testified before the grand jury that the graduate assistant told him in 2002 about the assault he had witnessed, and that he relayed the report to his superior, athletic director Tim Curley.

The graduate assistant, Mike McQueary, later met with Curley and Gary Schultz, a university vice president who oversaw campus police. But authorities said the allegation was not passed on to police or prosecutors.

Curley and Schultz are charged with failing to report the 2002 allegation and lying to the grand jury. Curley is on administrative leave, while Schultz has stepped down. Lawyers for both men have said their clients are innocent.

Prosecutors have said Paterno is not a target of the investigation.

Paterno's son, Scott Paterno, told the AP last month the first and only incident reported about Sandusky to Paterno was in 2002. Paterno has said in a statement that specific actions alleged to have occurred in the grand jury report were not relayed to him

Still, the state's top cop has criticized the way school leaders handled allegations and said Paterno and other officials had a moral responsibility to do more.

The 84-year-old Paterno initially announced his retirement effective at the end of the season, saying that the scandal was "one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more." The trustees fired him anyway, about 12 hours later.

Sandusky said that prosecutors have misconstrued his work with children. He described a family and work life that "could often be chaotic, even odd, one that lacked some classic boundaries between adults and children," the Times reported.

"It was, you know, almost an extended family," Mr. Sandusky said of his household's relationship with children from the charity he founded, The Second Mile. He characterized his experiences with children was close with as "precious times," and said the physical aspect of the relationships "just happened that way."

But Saturday's statement from one accuser's attorneys called such comments a "delusional rationalization."

"Pedophiles often horribly mischaracterize the abuse they perpetrate as something that their victims sought or benefited from," said Justine Andronici, who represents the same accuser as Shubin.

A third attorney, David Marshall, added that Sandusky's interview "goes a long way toward corroborating the victims' accounts" because Sandusky acknowledges "he `wrestled' and showered alone with boys, gave them gifts and money, and travelled with them."

Allegations involving two victims occurred in Sandusky's home, according to the grand jury report.

"Victim One testified that Sandusky had a practice of coming into the basement room after he told Victim One that it was time to go to bed," the grand jury report said. "Victim One testified that Sandusky would `crack his back,'" which was described in the report as Sandusky getting on to the bed and "rolling under the boy."

Sandusky is accused of mining the ranks of Second Mile to find underprivileged boys to abuse, which he says is false. He said that the charity never restricted his access to children until he became the subject of a criminal investigation in 2008.

He acknowledged that he regularly gave money to the disadvantaged boys at his charity, opened bank accounts for them and gave them gifts that had been donated to the charity.

"I tried to reward them sometimes with a little money in hand, just so that they could see something," he said. "But more often than not, I tried to set up, maybe get them to save the money, and I put it directly into a savings account established for them."

The paper said he grew most animated when talking about his relationships with children and most disconsolate when he spoke of Paterno and Penn State, and the upheaval caused by his indictment.

"I don't think it was fair," he is quoted as saying.

During the interview, Sandusky said his relationships and activities with Second Mile children caused some strain with Paterno. He told the paper he worried that having some children with him at hotels before games or on the sideline during games could have been regarded as a distraction by Paterno.

The 20-year-old "Teen Mom" star tweeted that she was "shocked" Kourtney Kardashian "is pregnant again," and a slew of other insults directed at the mom-to-be. But the extended Kardashian crew was quick to snap back at the MTV reality star.

"Why would I have anything to do with 'Teen Mom'?" Kourtney tweeted. "I'm 32 years old! I may look young, honey, but don't get it twisted."

Abraham, who is mom to 2-year-old Sophia, wasn't shy about slamming E!'s famous family. "Did she not learn anything from Teen Mom?" she tweeted. "Maybe it's a fake pregnancy like Kim's wedding. SAD."

Scott Disick, 28, who is father to Kourtney's 23-month old Mason and baby-to-be, pointed out to Abraham that, "We're not teenagers, ya f**king moron."

Khloe, 27, asked Disick on the microblogging site how he knew who Abraham was. His blunt reply? "I just thought she was some sh*t stain on Twitter, no?"

"Guess what! Age and money honestly do not change a person's poor choice," Abraham tweeted after slamming Kourtney. "Quit making excuses."

Khloe dutifully noted that she has "never met a better mother than Kourtney."

Illinois upsets No. 19 Gonzaga, 82-75 (AP)

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. ? With 4:13 left to play Saturday, Gonzaga center Robert Sacre hit a short jump shot that pulled the Bulldogs to within seven of Illinois, and gave the 7-foot center a sweet dose of relief.

He hadn't scored a point since late in the first half, and punched the air hard.

His relief lasted less than a minute, drained away by a quick basket by Illini center Meyers Leonard and then a foul ? Sacre's fifth ? that all but locked up an 82-75 upset for Illinois (8-0). It was the first loss of the season for Gonzaga (5-1).

Sacre picked up all five of his fouls in the second half, frustrated by a rotating cast of Illini big men.

"They were more aggressive in the second half, that's what always happens when you're more aggressive ? you're going to get more calls," he said, praising in particular 7-1 sophomore Meyers Leonard, who had a game-high 21 points.

"Runs the court like a deer. He's a great player," Sacre said. "I actually respect him a little more, I feel."

Sacre had 14 points with 4:22 left in the first half but didn't score again until that late jumper. He finished with 16.

The combination of Leonard, 6-8 junior Tyler Griffey and a pair of freshmen ? 6-11 Nnanna Egwu and 6-8 Ibby Djimde ? frustrated Sacre. Between them they had 12 fouls.

D.J. Richardson had 19 for Illinois, while Brandon Paul added 13.

Elias Harris led Gonzaga with 19 points and had a game-high eight rebounds. Kevin Pangos added 11.

Early, Sacre had his way, using his 14 first-half points to keep the Bulldogs close through the first half.

But after Sacre went cold ? frustrated by the rotating cast of Illini around him ? the Illini went on a 7-0 run early in the second half that gave them breathing room and broke what had been a 38-38 tie.

Griffey capped it with a short jumper with 15:57 left in the game for a 45-38 lead.

"Every time we made a run Illinois did a great job of answering," Gonzaga coach Mark Few said.

Ten minutes after Griffey's jumper, it was Richardson's turn.

First he took the ball on the break after a turnover, and drove straight toward the basket and Sacre. The ball didn't drop, but Sacre fouled Richardson ? sending Sacre to the bench with his fourth and Richardson to the line. He hit both free throws for a 64-58 lead with 6:47 to play.

Just over a minute later, Richardson buried a 3-pointer that gave the Illini a 67-60 lead.

Sacre finally found his touch again, hitting the short jumper that would be his last shot as Gonzaga closed to seven at 69-62.

On the next possession Leonard quickly hit a jump shot that erased Sacre's two points and kept the lead at 71-62.

Then Leonard drew the foul that sent Sacre to the bench for good.

"He just kind of threw his body into me, and kind of gave me a forearm a little bit," Leonard, in understated fashion, said.

There was nothing understated about the moment, though. The packed Assembly Hall erupted as Sacre walked to the bench.

Illinois rode the momentum of that loud home crowd and carried a lead through much of the first half. And even a stretch that looked ripe for an Illini meltdown ended with Illinois in front by eight.

Leonard, Egwu and Griffey all drew their second fouls in a short stretch and, with just under nine minutes to play, all headed to the bench. Leonard and Griffey stayed there the rest of the half.

The Bulldogs tied the game at 26 on a jumper by with 7:05 to play, and looked ready to run past an Illini lineup that included three freshmen and no one over 6-8.

But Richardson and Paul, juniors that help anchor a young team, carried Illinois.

First Richardson hit a three that fired up the crowd to give Illinois a 29-26 lead. Then Paul turned David Stockton's turnover into a basket, followed quickly by another 3 by Richardson, and Illinois was up 34-26 with 6:03 left in the half.

"We were able to survive it," said Illinois coach Bruce Weber, who played a dozen players by halftime Saturday, including five freshmen. "You could see a little nerves but I just kept saying fight and battle."

The Illini led 38-36 at the half, the first game this season the Bulldogs have trailed at halftime.

Few said the game and the crowd gave Gonzaga its toughest test of the season.

"It was a great road environment for our guys, it was the first one of the year," he said. "I thought we played well enough at times."

Gary Bell Jr. left the game late with what Gonzaga coach Mark Few said appeared to be a twisted knee. He didn't return.

Minister: China wants to invest in US roads, rails (AP)

BEIJING ? China wants to convert some of its mountain of U.S. government debt into investment in renovating American roads and subways, the commerce minister said Friday.

Speaking to a business group, Chen Deming said China wants closer cooperation with the United States in infrastructure, clean energy and technology.

Such investments would tie China more closely to Western economies and might help defuse fears Beijing will use its $3.2 trillion in foreign reserves ? some $1.15 trillion of that in Treasury and other U.S. government debt ? as a political weapon.

"We hope to achieve cooperation in the area of infrastructure," Chen told members of the American Chamber of Commerce in China.

Chen said he was amazed at the high quality of American subways and other infrastructure when he visited 20 years ago but many roads, railways and ports today need renovation.

"China is willing to turn some of our holdings of your debt into investment in the United States, hoping to create jobs for the United States," he said.

Also this week, the chairman of China's sovereign wealth fund said it wants to invest in projects to improve British roads and infrastructure. He said that would help to boost feeble global economic growth.

Beijing is encouraging Chinese companies to investment more abroad to reduce the country's reliance on exports and investment. It has sent trade and investment delegations to the United States, Europe and elsewhere to look for opportunities.

Chen said Beijing wants to see Chinese and U.S. companies cooperate more closely on clean energy, environmental and energy-saving technology, information technology biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

The minister acknowledged disagreements between Beijing and Washington over global trade talks, trade in environmental technology and other areas but said the two governments had more areas of common interest.

Chen repeated Beijing's longstanding appeal to Washington to relax restrictions on exports of "dual use" technologies with possible weapons applications.

"We hope Chinese-U.S. trade will continue to grow and the imbalance will shrink. But that takes both of us to achieve," he said.

China's economic growth should be above 9 percent next year despite "difficulties and obstacles" in the global economy that are battering consumer demand, Chen said. He noted that China also faces domestic problems including inflation.

Beijing eased lending curbs this week in an effort to spur business growth, reversing course after spending the past two years trying to cool an overheated economy with interest rate hikes and investment controls.

"I can assure you the Chinese economy will have a slight slowdown but nonetheless it will enjoy stable and sound development," Chen said.

Mexico activist in Juarez women killings wounded (AP)

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico ? An activist representing relatives of women slain or missing in the border city of Ciudad Juarez was shot Friday in what authorities called an apparent robbery attempt.

Chihuahua state prosecutors said Norma Andrade, 51, was shot twice outside her home and was in stable condition in a hospital.

Andrade was the second activist to be shot this week in northern Mexico. Anti-crime activist Nepomuceno Moreno was killed Monday in Hermosillo. He had protested the kidnapping of his teenage son.

Andrade founded an organization of relatives of women who have gone missing or been murdered in Ciudad Juarez to pressure authorities to solve the cases. Her daughter Lilia Alejandra Garcia Andrade was tortured, raped and killed in 2001 when she was 17.

Arturo Sandoval, spokesman for the state Attorney General's Office, said Andrade told investigators that a man approached her outside her house and tugged at her purse. When she tried to hold on to it, the man fired his gun wounding her right hand and left shoulder, Sandoval said.

Authorities were still trying to determine whether it was a robbery or a murder attempt, Sandoval said.

Andrade's daughter, Malu Andrade, told The Associated Press that teachers at the middle school where her mother works said suspicious men had been asking about her whereabouts Friday morning. The attack happened in the afternoon.

"Authorities knew that we had been threatened," the daughter said by telephone.

A series of eerily similar killings of more than 100 mainly young women began in Ciudad Juarez in 1993, but appeared to had tapered off by late 2004 or early 2005.

The killings have been the topic of books, documentaries and the 2006 movie "Bordertown" starring Jennifer Lopez. Lopez in 2007 received a special recognition from Andrade and her organization, Bring Our Daughters Home.

Box.net now offering 50GB free storage to LG users

Android Central

Putting the HTC/Dropbox collaboration in the shade, Box.net have formed a partnership with LG which offers users of LG mobile devices an astonishing 50GB of free storage. Best of all, it isn't limited to new devices.

As you can see from the image, my trusty Optimus 2X qualified for the offer. To take advantage, head over to the Market and download the Box.net application for Android 2.1 and above (download links below) and register for a new account within the app. Then hey presto, 50GB of storage completely free.

In addition, the app itself received an update today with a couple of interesting additions. It now allows files to be downloaded from your cloud storage to your device, multi-file uploading and auto updating of files edited locally within apps such as Quickoffice.

For anyone not familiar with Box, it is a little different to Dropbox in its execution which partly comes from its more business focussed nature. Desktop sync is not available in free accounts, that sets you back $15 a month. The web access is fine though, and for a free 50GB storage locker, it's worth signing up just for the hell of it. The offer is extended through until March 21st 2012 so remember this if you're going out to purchase a Nitro HD or anything else LG may have on the horizon.

(AP) ? Actor Rupert Everett and Oscar Wilde's grandson have unveiled a makeover of the writer's gravesite on the 111th anniversary of his death.

Everett, who is writing about the poet's life, spoke at a podium Wednesday bearing a poster of the pre-renovation tomb covered in notes and lipstick at Paris' famed Pere Lachaise cemetery.

The tomb had become such a well-loved pilgrimage site ? and had been so well-kissed ? that it needed renovation. A glass screen now separates visitors from the stone itself.

Everett hailed Wilde's "force" and the "amazing trajectory of his life."

Grandson Merlin Holland said his grandfather "would be incredibly touched by all the attention. After all he was sent out of England in 1897 a bankrupt, a homosexual and a convict ... and the French took him to their hearts."

How to Mentally Prepare Yourself to Start a New Job [Jobs]

How to Mentally Prepare Yourself to Start a New Job You nailed the job interview, and now the hiring manager wants to know when you can start, and whether you're planning to take some time off between leaving your current gig and starting the new one. You may be tempted to take a week off just to put your feet up, or start as soon as possible to avoid any gaps in your income, but here's how to make the right decision and determine whether you're mentally or emotionally ready to start a new job right away.

Can You Afford a Break?

The first question to ask yourself when considering your new job's start date is how long you can afford to be out of a job. In some cases, your new employer may want you on the job as soon as possible, and if you can't afford to take time off in between jobs, even for a few days or a long weekend, then the decision is already made for you. If you can afford a few days away from work, have your own emergency fund, or just need some time to recharge, you may want to consider a couple of days in between jobs to help you get in the right mindset to start a new gig. Here are some basics you should consider.

  • How to Mentally Prepare Yourself to Start a New Job
  • Can you survive missing a paycheck? Make sure you can afford to take a few days off to relax before you make the decision.
  • When does your new employer want you to start? You want to make a good impression on your new employer, and while most won't mind if you want a few days off between jobs, if your new employer wants you to show up the Monday after your last Friday at your old job, you may have an uphill battle trying to squeeze in a few days off in between to relax. Make sure your new employer is okay with you delaying your first day, or schedule your last day at the current employer so you can get a few days off between jobs.
  • When do your benefits expire? For many of us, leaving a job means losing our health insurance and other benefits. Do your benefits expire the day you leave the company, or at the end of the month? When do the benefits at the new job kick in? Do you anticipate any medical needs if you have any periods without insurance? Consider your 401(k), and if you need to roll it over or make any changes to it, or if there's any paperwork you have to complete before you can start a new job. Think these things over carefully before deciding to take a few days off. If your benefits expire at the end of the month or your new benefits won't take effect for a month after you start anyway, there's no harm in taking a couple of days between jobs.
  • Do you need time to recharge? If you're leaving your current job because you're burnt out and just need time to get away from what you're doing, you should definitely consider a little time between jobs. You don't want to start the new job carrying all of the emotional baggage from your last job?you want to go in with fresh eyes, eager to learn new things and meet new people. You shouldn't be world-weary on your first day at a new gig.
  • Do you have questions for your new boss that you want answered before you get there? Are there any lingering questions you might have about the position that you want answered before you show up? You may want to take a day or so to get your thoughts in order and ring them with questions or thoughts so you can hit the ground running when you arrive on your first day.

Once you have the basics out of the way, you can address some more personal questions and considerations that might make you want to take a few days between jobs.

How to Mentally Prepare Yourself to Start a New Job

Are You In The Right Frame of Mind for A New Job?

Stop and take stock of your mental, emotional, and physical health. How has your diet been? Have you been exercising regularly, and getting enough rest? They may seem personal, but all of them have an impact on your professional performance, and if you those personal habits aren't where you want them to be, you won't find a better opportunity to take the time to correct them than the time in-between jobs. It might be a good opportunity to infuse your diet with healthy foods, reboot your sleep cycle, schedule some time to get to the gym, or even let go of bad habits like working long hours overtime or bringing your work home with you. If you need a few days to put your mind and body in order and try to establish some good habits and behavior patterns before you have a new job to worry about and foul them up, take some time off between those two jobs to lay the groundwork of what will hopefully be a healthier and happier you, complete with a new job to match.

How Stressed Out Did Your Last Job Make You?

If one of the reasons you're quitting your current job for a new one is because you're just fed up with the nonsense you put up with at your current job, you should take some time to relax and de-stress before you start the new one. Even if you're feeling good about having left the old job, odds are that you're still a little tired, sleep deprived, or worked up over the process of leaving a job. It can't hurt to take a few days off. However, if your last few days were easy ones or your previous employer just told you to not bother coming back after you put in your two weeks, you may have all the time you need to recharge and get yourself in the right mindset for a new opportunity. Ultimately, only you can decide whether the stress and baggage from a previous job outweighs the happiness and excitement you have for a new job.

How to Mentally Prepare Yourself to Start a New Job

How Stressed Out Will This New Job Make You?

Even if your old job didn't stress you out, your new job may be the biggest professional challenge you've faced. If you know you're about to walk into one of the most hectic, busy, and possibly stressful positions you've ever had, you may want to take a little time before you walk in the door for the first time to get yourself psyched up for it. Stress cuts both ways?even if your last job let you off the hook easily, if your new job is looking like it'll be a trial (even if it's a trial you happily signed up for), you won't do yourself any favors by rushing into it without taking time to prepare.

Do You Need to Brush Up On Your Skills?

In the same vein as stress and emotional baggage, if you think your new job will challenge you in ways you've never been challenged before, or you know from your interviews that your new job will require you to use some skills and abilities you haven't used in a while, it may be an absolute must to take a few days off between jobs to brush up.

This is especially important for developers or designers who will be required to use new tools or languages that they know but haven't used, or jobs where your organizational skills and productivity techniques will be put to the test. If you're going to manage people, now might be a good time to brush up on your management skills, or take a couple of days off to read your favorite management books or case studies. If you're a project manager, you may want to take a little time to re-acquaint yourself with the PMBOK and whatever project management tool your new job requires you use. Even your personal productivity technique may need tweaking for a new job with new challenges. Take some time to get your skills and tools sharpened and in order before starting your new job.

How to Mentally Prepare Yourself to Start a New Job

Do You Need to Make Any Changes to Your Wardrobe, Workspace, or Buy New Equipment?

You have a new job, but do you need to buy new clothes? Perhaps you'll be working from home and your desk just isn't set up for long hours of work. Do you need to entertain clients in your home office now, or plan for a new commute? Maybe you need to buy some new equipment, like a new laptop or monitor for your home office, a new laptop bag for work, some new notebooks, or just desk organization tools to help you get settled at the new job. The last thing you'll want to worry about when you start a new job is whether or not the Staples will be open on your way home from a new office on a drive you're not familiar with.

Make sure you talk with your future manager about what your company's equipment policies are and what your company will provide you with, and then go shopping for the rest. If you're switching from a job where the dress code was business formal to a job where the dress code is completely casual, you'll probably need to go shopping for enough pairs of jeans to get you through a workweek. The inverse is also true?if you're going from a business casual environment to a formal environment, you'll need some new clothes as soon as possible. Whatever your equipment, workspace, or clothing needs, you're better off shopping for them before you start the job. That way you can find bargains and shop at your leisure, well before they become required for you to function at work.

How do you prepare for a new job? Do you prefer to take a few days off before you make the jump, or do you go right from one job to another with barely a weekend in between? Share your experiences in the comments.
