Phillip Phillips, the singer so nice they named him twice.
By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper
Phillip Phillips has a new name as of Wednesday night -- "American Idol" champion.
The victory has only drawn more attention to his own double name. In his very first appearance on "Idol," before he was seen wowing judges Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson with?Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" and?Michael Jackson's "Thriller," he addressed the name game.
"I'm Phillip Phillips, I'm 20 years old, and I'm from Leesburg, Georgia, and yes, that is my real name," he told the "Idol" cameras back in February.
He comes by the name naturally. He's actually Phillip Phillips Jr. -- his father is Phillip Phillips Sr. While Phillip Jr. used to work in his father's pawn shop, something tells us he won't have much time for that any more.
Since he already has two such?similar names, some fans online have taken to wondering if the singer's middle name is also Phillip. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Phillips wasn't telling.
"We don?t speak of the middle name," he joked to a writer.?"It?s a secret. Maybe you?ll find out. I haven?t told anyone else. I gotta keep some mystery here."
Wrote?one reader on the Phillip Phillips forum on Television Without Pity: "He needs to try out for (the) Philadelphia Phillies."
He's far from the only famous person with a double name. Former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson is running for Senate, and singer Kris Kristofferson's full name is Kristoffer Kristofferson. But not all double names are given at birth -- wrestler Kelly Kelly was born Barbara Jean Blank.
