TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE ? Tyndall?s Pelican Point Golf Couse has been reopend to the public.
The course essentially has been closed to the public for roughly 10 years after the 9/11 attacks caused additional security precautions across the country to be implemented, including the golf course.
?It was either we open it up to the public or lock the gates,? said Herman Bell, chief of Tyndall?s 325th Fighter Wing Public Affairs.
Brig. Gen. John K. McMullen authorized the reopening of the golf course. The cost of maintaining the course was one of the reasons for reopening the base.
Pelican Point is an 18-hole course within the confines of Tyndall AFB and features 7,051 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 73.7 and it has a slope rating of 128, according to Golflink.com. The course first opened in 1961.
Sprawling more than 120 acres along the shore of St. Andrew Bay, the championship course features renovated greens, a fully equipped Pro Shop and a snack bar overlooking the water.
Golfers can obtain an access pass to get on the base by visiting www.PelicanPointGolf.com/pass and filling out the Background Affidavit and DD 1172 forms located on the site and fax the two completed forms to Pelican Point at 850-286-5182. Once the background check has been completed, you will be contacted by a Pelican Point staff member and will be issued a pass good for six months.
For additional information contact the 325th Force Support Squadron marketing director, Corey Coleman, at 283-8553.
