Cancer risks double when two carcinogens present at 'safe' levels, epigenetics study finds

June 28, 2013 ? Science knows that arsenic and estrogen can cause cancer. At certain very low levels, the chemicals offer little to no threats to human health.

However, new research conducted by Texas Tech University scientists has found that low doses of both chemicals together -- even at levels low enough to be considered "safe" for humans if they were on their own -- can cause cancer in prostate cells.

The combination of the two chemicals was almost twice as likely to create cancer in prostate cells, the research found. The study published online in the peer-reviewed journal The Prostate.

Kamaleshwar Singh, an assistant professor at The Institute of Environmental and Human Health (TIEHH) at Texas Tech said the findings could have an impact on health regulations regarding the "safe" doses of these chemicals and others. Most regulations are set by testing one chemical at a time on cells. Very few if any have looked at multiple chemicals at the same time.

"The majority of cancers are caused by environmental influences," Singh said. "Only about 5 to 10 percent of cancers are due to genetic predisposition. Science has looked at these chemicals, such as arsenic, and tested them in a lab to find the amounts that may cause cancer. But that's just a single chemical in a single test. In the real world, we are getting exposed to many chemicals at once."

Singh said he became interested in studying two chemicals at once after looking at arsenic's carcinogenic properties in a previous paper.

Because cigarette smoke and well water in some areas, including India, Mexico and even Lubbock county, can contain arsenic, Singh and his doctoral student, Justin Treas, wondered how the carcinogenic properties might change when paired with the presence of another carcinogenic chemical.

The two focused on estrogen because of the chemical's abundance. Many plastics, such as food can liners and bisphenol A (BPA), release small amounts of chemicals that mimic estrogen in the body.

"Co-exposure was creating a greater impact," Singh said. "That was one of the important findings of our study. The next thing we wanted to know is how these two chemicals are creating a greater effect."

Unlike stronger chemicals that do major damage to the DNA in a cell, such as benzene, arsenic and estrogen aren't major mutagens Singh said. Instead, their presence tends to stop certain genes from expressing. The process is called DNA hypermethylation.

In the experiment, human prostate cells were treated about once a week for six months with arsenic, estrogen and a combination of the two. Many of the tests involved levels of arsenic, estrogen or both at levels considered safe by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Treas said the two chemicals stopped the MLH1 gene, which is responsible for sending the signal to start the self-destruct sequence when a cell is damaged. Because the self-destruct couldn't activate, the cells became cancerous after exposure.

"With the lower dose not killing the cell, it's causing damages that go under the cell's radar," Treas said. "We found when you have two compounds together, lower doses could be more serious problem."

Zimmerman trial over teen's death enters 5th day

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? A video security expert has taken the witness stand in the George Zimmerman murder trial.

Greg McKinney is the first witness Friday as the trial enters a fifth day of testimony.

McKinney's company monitored the security cameras at the townhome complex where Zimmerman fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last year.

Zimmerman is pleading not guilty to second-degree murder, claiming self-defense.

Jurors already have been exposed to some of the state's biggest pieces of evidence, including the 911 call featuring cries for help prosecutors believe came from Martin.

On Thursday, a friend of Martin who had been on the phone with him when he was shot testified about what she heard during his confrontation with Zimmerman.

Portuguese unions hold major anti-austerity strike

LISBON, Portugal (AP) ? A national strike against austerity measures by Portuguese labor unions on Thursday shut down many public services, but the government showed no signs of backing down from the pay cuts, tax hikes and layoffs it insists will help restore the bailed-out country's financial health.

Most services operated by the national train company CP, the Lisbon subway and city bus companies ? all of them state-run ? were cancelled during the 24-hour walkout, forcing commuters to use their own vehicles and congesting traffic in the capital Lisbon and Porto, the second-largest city. Airport management company ANA reported that 37 flights were cancelled by early afternoon, 32 of them at Lisbon airport, and many delays.

The protest went to the heart of the current debate in Europe over whether to ditch debt-reducing austerity policies and adopt more growth measures to pull the group of 17 European Union countries that use the euro, including Portugal, out of recession.

Portuguese business leaders and opposition political parties have joined labor unions in appealing for a change in course, but the government said it won't budge from an austerity strategy it insists will pay off in the long term.

It is preparing a new raft of reforms to cut public spending that are expected to further reduce living standards and stoke a record level of unemployment, even as Portugal weathers a forecast third straight year of recession.

"The country hasn't ground to a halt" Cabinet spokesman Luis Marques Guedes said of the strike after a meeting of government ministers. "The government believes that work is what the country needs to do."

The General Confederation of Portuguese Workers and the General Workers' Union, which together represent about 1 million workers in this country of 10.6 million people, want the center-right coalition government to ease off its spending cuts and take more steps to create jobs. Thursday's walkout was only their fourth joint protest in 25 years.

Some health centers around the country stayed shut, Portuguese media reported, while hospitals rescheduled operations and medical appointments. Many government offices had fewer staff but few private companies reported walkouts.

Portugal's European partners are keen for it to stick with its cost-cutting drive, which is viewed as vital if heavily-indebted eurozone countries are to put their three-year-old financial crisis behind them. Portugal's government debt stands at almost 124 percent of gross domestic product, the third-highest in the EU after Greece and Italy.

Also, the austerity program is a demand of foreign creditors ? Portugal's EU partners and the International Monetary Fund ? who lent it 78 billion euros ($102 billion) in a financial rescue two years ago. If Portugal doesn't stick with the planned cuts the creditors can stop disbursements of the bailout funds, leaving the country at risk of bankruptcy.

Nevertheless, the outlook for Portugal is grim. The jobless rate, currently at a record 17.8 percent, is forecast to hit 18.5 percent next year. The bailout creditors predicting a contraction of 2.3 percent this year after the Portuguese economy shrank 3.2 percent in 2012. The budget deficit stood at 6.4 percent of annual GDP in 2012 ? higher than the 5 percent target for that year though much lower than the 10.1 percent recorded in 2010.

Already, the government has raised sales tax to 23 percent from 13 percent, while income tax hikes have costing many middle-class workers more than a month's pay. A European Commission report published Wednesday forecast further declines in household income this year and next.

Unions are also angered by the government's latest plans, which include increasing the working time of state employees to 40 hours a week from 35; increasing their monthly pension deductions while lowering their pension entitlements; and laying off some 50,000 government workers out of the total of about 583,000.

The crunch won't stop there, however.

The government, which has to find another 3.4 billion euros of savings in 2014, is due to present next month details of a deep and broad reform of how the state is run. The proposal is expected to order a further streamlining of state services and will likely fuel more protests.

Women's Rising Consumer Clout Propels Chanel To Top-Brand ...

Chanel

According to a study based on internet search results released yesterday by Digital Luxury Group , Chanel has overtaken Louis Vuitton as the most digitally ?sought-after? fashion brand in China. There are many factors that could have caused this ascension?Chanel, for example, is taking a measured approach to China expansion in order to remain exclusive, while Louis Vuitton has faced the possibility of having become too overexposed . One notable point to observe, however, is that several factors surrounding the label?s success point to the growing purchasing power of women as a major correlation.

First of all, Chanel?s line of beauty products was considered to be a major factor in its popularity in China.?According to Digital Luxury Group Founder and CEO David Sadigh, beauty gave it an edge over second-place Louis Vuitton. ?Chanel is bene?ting from an important level of interest in China, mostly emanating from strong interest from Chinese consumers in its Beauty products, which Louis Vuitton does not have,? he wrote in the report.?Est?e Lauder, the report?s top beauty brand, came in right after Chanel on the total list of the top 50 brands across all luxury sectors. (AP) ? Nelson Mandela's health improved overnight and although his condition remains critical it is now stable, the South African government said Thursday. One of the former president's daughters said he is still opening his eyes and reacting to the touch of his family even though his situation is precarious.

The report that the health of the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader had taken a turn for the better came amid a growing sense in South Africa that Mandela was approaching the end of his life. Well-wishers have delivered flowers and messages of support to the Pretoria hospital where he is being treated, and prayer sessions were held around the country on Thursday.

President Jacob Zuma's office said in a statement that he received the encouraging update from the medical team that is treating Mandela. Zuma had canceled an international trip on Thursday, instead visiting Mandela for the second time in two days.

"I canceled my visit to Mozambique today so that I can see him and confer with the doctors," Zuma said in the statement. "He is much better today than he was when I saw him last night."

In April, Zuma gave an overly upbeat assessment about Mandela's condition. At that time, state television broadcast footage of a visit by Zuma and other political leaders to Mandela's home. Zuma said at the time that Mandela was in good shape, but the footage showed him silent and unresponsive, even when Zuma tried to hold his hand.

Mandela, who was imprisoned for 27 years during white racist rule and became president in all-race elections in 1994, was taken to a hospital on June 8 for what the government said was a recurring lung infection.

Zuma urged people to pray for Mandela, and continue with their work and daily activities even while he is hospitalized.

The president's office said it was disturbed by what it called rumors about Mandela's health and appealed for respect for the privacy and dignity of the former leader. Unconfirmed reports about Mandela have swirled on social media and other forums.

Mandela's condition is acknowledged to be grave. He is on life support systems, according to a few television networks that quote anonymous sources, and presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj has declined to confirm or deny those reports.

Makaziwe Mandela, one of Mandela's daughters, echoed the criticism, saying foreign media coverage of her father's illness had become intrusive, particularly at the Pretoria hospital where many journalists have gathered.

"There's sort of a racist element with many of the foreign media, where they just cross boundaries," she said in the SABC interview. "It's like truly vultures waiting when a lion has devoured a buffalo, waiting there for the last carcasses. That's the image that we have, as a family."

She said: "We don't mind the interest. But I just think it has gone overboard."

In comments posted on the SABC web site, Makaziwe Mandela said "anything is imminent" because her father, referred to affectionately by many South Africans as "Tata," or "Father," is in a very critical state.

"I want to emphasize again that it's only God who knows when the time to go is," she said. "So we will wait with Tata. He's still giving us hope by opening his eyes, he's still reactive to touch, we will live with that hope until the final end comes."

Beginning a trip to Africa, President Obama said in Senegal on Thursday that his thoughts and prayers were with South Africans and in particular the Mandela family. He said he was inspired, as a law school student in the early 1990s, to see Mandela step forward after decades of imprisonment to help deliver democracy in a spirit of reconciliation with his former captors.

"It gave me a sense of what is possible in the world when righteous people, when people of good will, work together on behalf of a larger cause," said Obama, who described Mandela as a personal hero.

"And if and when he passes from this place, one thing I think we'll all know is that his legacy is one that will linger on throughout the ages," Obama said.

PRECIOUS-Gold slides 4 pct, near 3-year low as Wall Street rallies

* Gold, silver prices hit lowest since August 2010 * SPDR, biggest gold ETF, has biggest outflow in 2 months * Gold down 23 pct in Q2, on track for record quarterly loss * Coming up: U.S. PCE price index, personal income Thursday (Adds comments, update prices) By Frank Tang and Jan Harvey NEW YORK/LONDON, June 26 (Reuters) - Gold tumbled 4 percent on Wednesday, taking it near a three-year low as a rallying U.S. equity markets further cut into demand for bullion as a hedge against economic uncertainty. Silver dropped 5 percent and platinum group metals also declined sharply. Bullion tumbled again even after the U.S. government slashed its estimate for first-quarter economic growth, which made investors less worried that the Federal Reserve would move soon to end its U.S. economic stimulus. Bullion has slid around $125 an ounce in four sessions since the Fed signalled it plans to wind down the era of easy money. With two trading days left in the second quarter, gold was down 23 percent for the period, on course for its biggest quarterly decline since Reuters began tracking gold prices in 1968. "We bought gold for two reasons: because we were worried about the inflationary impact of policy and because we thought the financial system was going to fall apart," said Sean Corrigan, chief investment strategist at Diapason Commodities Management. "Although it may be completely the wrong judgement, the market has decided that none of those at the moment is a concern," Corrigan said. Spot gold slumped to its lowest since August 2010 at $1,223.54 an ounce. It was last down 4 percent at $1,225.91 an ounce by 3:08 p.m. EDT (1908 GMT). U.S. gold futures for August delivery settled down $45.30 to $1,229.80. Trading volume exceeded 315,000 lots, sharply above its 30-day average of 211,000, preliminary Reuters data showed. Gold, which has lost more than a quarter of its value this year, accelerated losses during Wednesday's session as the S&P 500 rose. The benchmark U.S. stock index was up more than 1 percent in late trade. "People want risk-on and gold is therefore seen as a source of cash and not as a safe haven, because that's not needed," said Simon Weeks, head of precious metals at the Bank of Nova Scotia. On Tuesday, the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund posted its biggest outflow in two months. Holdings in SPDR Gold Trust fell 16.23 tonnes, 1.65 percent from the day before, to 969.50 tonnes, their lowest since February 2009. On charts, several technical analyses including the relative strength index suggested gold is oversold, said Carlos Perez-Santalla at brokerage Marex Spectron. "A pop could be expected if another test of the downside fails," he said. Silver fell to its lowest since August 2010 at $18.39 an ounce. Spot prices were later down 5.2 percent at $18.57 an ounce. ETF OUTFLOW, ASIA DEMAND EYED The world's No. 1 gold ETF the SPDR Gold Shares reported the biggest one-day drop in its holdings in more than two months at 16.23 tonnes on Tuesday. That brought the fund's total outflow for the year to 381 tonnes. Further weighing on gold, demand in the No. 1 consumer India is likely to fall this quarter as the government moves to curb gold imports. Worries about a liquidity crunch in China also pressured physical gold demand, analysts said. Among platinum group metals, platinum was down 3.8 percent at 1,298.99 an ounce, while palladium slid 4.9 percent to $629.97 an ounce. 3:08 PM EDT LAST/ NET PCT LOW HIGH CURRENT SETTLE CHNG CHNG VOL US Gold AUG 1229.80 -45.30 -3.6 1221.00 1277.50 285,723 US Silver JUL 18.587 -0.939 -4.8 18.360 19.580 83,798 US Plat JUL 1303.70 -46.80 -3.5 1299.30 1351.10 14,076 US Pall SEP 633.25 -35.55 -5.3 630.80 667.50 5,987 Gold 1225.91 -50.83 -4.0 1222.55 1277.79 Silver 18.570 -1.010 -5.2 18.460 19.630 Platinum 1298.99 -51.01 -3.8 1303.50 1349.25 Palladium 629.97 -32.77 -4.9 634.00 664.24 TOTAL MARKET VOLUME 30-D ATM VOLATILITY CURRENT 30D AVG 250D AVG CURRENT CHG US Gold 315,083 211,046 182,075 26.69 2.30 US Silver 145,180 62,340 57,447 34.03 -3.63 US Platinum 30,992 15,627 11,806 25.67 -1.93 US Palladium 6,092 6,586 5,563 (Additional reporting by Veronica Brown in London; Editing by Marguerita Choy and David Gregorio)
