TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR GRAPHIC DESIGNER INDIVIDUAL CONTRACT

UNICEF Sierra Leone invites applications from suitably qualified persons for consideration for an individual contractor contract as per the below mentioned Terms of Reference.

Background and Rationale

UNICEF Sierra Leone produces and supports the production of different promotion material. This material can be used for donor or media visits or to accompany donor proposals and reports or it can be part of UNICEF projects. For the design of this material the support of a graphic designer is needed. Since the number of graphic designers in country is very limited, UNICEF has decided to employ a full time graphic designer to ensure promotion and information material can be produced in a timely manner.

Purpose of Assignment and Objective?

Under the supervision of the Head of External Relations and Advocacy, the graphic designer will design promotion and information materials for Health & Nutrition, C4D, WASH, Education, Planning, Media and External Relations sectors to effective programme delivery.

Responsibilities

Regularly update inventory of existing image database for easy access
Regularly update image data base on programme related activities (To be evaluated from time to time and amended to suit the overall best interests of UNICEF)
Provide technical support in graphic artistry, photography, page-planning, colour selection, brand standardization, ISBN and ISSN coding.
Prepare IEC materials to camera-ready status, liaise with selected printers for adherence to required specifications; review dummy and draft printed matter of: training manuals, brochures, posters, flyers and FAQ, charts, billboards, handbooks and folders as requested by programme sections.
Review and advise on the use of various photographic and visual materials, the qualitative aspects of production-(pre-print and post-print)
Undertake inspection and review of print proofs to ensure quality control
Design and brand CD and DVD jackets and labels
Design and layout of information and promotion materials including newsletters, banners, posters, roll-ups, flyers and FAQs, folders and brochures

Key Deliverables

Design and layout of the yearly calendar
Design and layout of the quarterly donor newsletter
Updated photo database
Design and layout of fact sheets and programme briefs

Geographical scope

The designer will be based in the UNICEF office in Freetown, but needs to be prepared for regular travel up-country

Duration of Contract

The duration of the initial contract will be from 15^th March until 31 December 2013

Supervision and Reporting

The selected candidate will report to the Head of External Relations and Advocacy.

Qualifications or specialized knowledge/experience required:

Higher National Diploma (HND) or degree in Graphic Arts and Design or related qualifications.
At least 5 years work experience in the Graphic Arts and Design
Ability to express clearly and concisely ideas and concepts in written and oral form
Demonstrable creativity and experience in translating messages into graphics
Advanced computer skills in various office applications (including PageMaker Corel Draw, Photoshop, Paint Shop,) and internet navigation skills
Fluency in English and one national language required. Knowledge of other languages an asset.
Photography skills an asset
