WD ships 5mm Blue UltraSlim drive, enables thinner budget Ultrabooks
We were intrigued with the prospects of Western Digital's 5mm Blue drive when we saw it last summer: finally, a 2.5-inch spinning disk thin enough to rival slimmer SSDs without the price premium of a hybrid like the WD Black SSHD. If you shared the same curiosity, you'll be glad to hear that the finished product is shipping as the WD Blue UltraSlim. Device builders can now stuff 500GB into spaces that would exclude 7mm disks, yet pay just $89 for the privilege -- a price low enough to let even frugal Ultrabooks shed some bulk. The 5mm disk reaches its miniscule dimensions through the use of a tiny edge connector that mates both power and a SATA interface, leaving more room for the drive machinery. We can't guarantee that you'll find a Blue UltraSlim in your next PC or set-top box when Western Digital hasn't named any of its customers, but we wouldn't be surprised if the wafer-like drive is commonplace in the near future.

Safety is paramount | Otago Daily Times Online News : Otago, South ...
Workplace safety should be paramount in every business, from the humblest of enterprises to multi-national global operators.
But that is not always the case, as the families of the 29 miners who lost their lives at Pike River can attest.
Last week, Pike River Coal was convicted in the Greymouth District Court on all nine charges arising from the November 2010 mining tragedy.
The charges included four of failing to ensure the safety of its employees and four of failing to ensure no employees, contractors or subcontractors were harmed while working at the mine.
Judge Jane Farish heard evidence last month on the lack of safety methods employed by Pike River Coal but reserved her decision until last week. Judge Farish found the breaches by Pike River Coal were ''causative of the explosion and the subsequent deaths of those men who perished''.
''In this case, there were fundamental breaches of the Health and Safety in Employment Act which led to the unnecessary deaths of 29 men.''
Judge Farish will issue a detailed judgement within a fortnight, ahead of sentencing in July.
But there is no doubt from her words about how the neglect of Pike River Coal caused the deaths of the 29 miners, which spread pain and suffering among the Greymouth community.
There is a serious anomaly that will likely continue the suffering, however.
The receivers of Pike River Coal earlier indicated they would not take steps in relation to the charges brought against the company by the former Department of Labour.
The receivers say they had no direct knowledge of the matters which were the subject of the department's prosecution because they all occurred before their appointment.
Given the amounts owing to creditors, the receivers did not consider it in the economic interest of creditors to spend the limited funds available to the company on any defences to the charges.
This was a pragmatic decision in the circumstances, they say.
So who will pay? The limited funds being spoken about by receivers will go nowhere near paying appropriate fines or compensation. There is limited insurance cover, which may be used for such payments.
The Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union is calling for Judge Farish to impose the maximum penalty on Pike River Coal.
The union says it is the most serious breach of New Zealand's workplace health and safety laws in at least a generation and the sentence must reflect the gravity of the crime.
In reality, Pike River Coal is little more than a shell company, now in receivership. The union is calling for the directors and management of the former coal miner to be made accountable as they were the ones making the decisions at the time of the tragedy.
There are strict rules around the duties of directors, but in the case of Pike River Coal the lines are blurred by the receivership, the date on which the deaths occurred and the forthcoming case against former Pike River chief executive Peter Whittall.
Earlier, VLI Drilling Pty Ltd, of Australia, was convicted on three charges and fined $46,800.
The ramifications of the decision by Judge Farish will be felt throughout the mining community and elsewhere.
The Government will be called upon to tighten rules around the duties of directors. Directors of failed finance companies have regularly appeared before courts in recent months - some receiving imprisonment, others hefty fines.
In the case of Pike River Coal, there seems little chance of directors being called to account. Sadly, there seems little chance of any money being available for anyone, given the parlous state of the finances of the failed company.
Mining is an industry not without risk, but those risks need to be managed. In the case of Pike River Coal, it seems risks and rewards were put before safety.
Without a recognition by authorities of the need for accountability, even in the event of a failed and broke company, 29 people died needlessly on the West Coast - and others will follow.

The world in which we inhabit today is practically driven entirely by the Internet, and this means that most successful businesses are employing Online marketing techniques. It has never been easier to market your business using the Internet, as you can utilize everything from electronic newsletters to static websites. Keep reading to learn how you can use the many opportunities presented by the online world to market your business.
Observe your competitors. You could learn from their successes and mistakes. When looking at a competitor?s website, put yourself in the shoes of a customer. If you would purchase their products, what about their marketing encourages you to do so? How can you incorporate some of these strategies into your own website?
Partner with other online businesses to create interesting combination deals that will attract customers and help you share your customer bases. This is a good way to link multiple markets, thereby collectively increasing sales volume. For example, online booking agents have reduced prices whenever you book airfare, hotels and car rentals within the same transaction. This is a great way to work with companies that are not your direct competitors.
Make sure you invest some time to learn at least the basics of web design. There is a lot of HTML information online to help you learn web design. Put in thirty minutes a day at least so you can improve your web page building skills.
NOTE! Use image searches to market online, even though this is a lesser-used method of marketing. A relevant image on your site can draw traffic to it in the same way that search-relevant keywords in your text do.
When marketing your business online, it?s important that you make your customers feel as if they?re in control. This might require you to set up your content in such a way that the customer actually dictates the flow. There is so much unsolicited information and spam advertising flying around the Internet that it?s all too easy to fade into the background by sending too much to your customers. But if they feel that they?re dictating the search and that they?re not being coerced into anything, they?re more likely to trust your site.
Try to get notable and respected people within your industry to give testimonials or advice on your site. You will need to have them sign a legal document authorizing you to use their testimony. The text of the interviews or questionnaires can then be configured into article form and disseminated online through article directories. This can dramatically increase the traffic to your site.
There are many techniques that can be employed when using affiliate marketing. Apply one of the many tips you learned today towards building success for your site. Given that a significant number of consumers prefer to obtain information online, Website marketing can help grow your business.
Try to market without resorting to spam. You may think it?s very efficient to make use of web crawlers for posting comments hundreds of times on multiple blogs; however, this kind of posting never ends up yielding good results. By not placing a personal touch in your advertising, it can turn people away.
NOTE! Keep the information on your site relevant and current. When customers are handed out of date information, they typically assume that the site is not viable or doing well.
OK, we are virtually done for today?
I?ll go ahead and post some more internet marketing insights tips for you at some stage tomorrow. Don?t hesitate to, leave your questions directly below and I?ll take a look at what can be done to help you out.
Thanks and chat with you the next time.

HBT: Angels drop Hamilton from cleanup spot
Teams have been pitching around Albert Pujols to get to Josh Hamilton, so the Angels have dropped Hamilton to No. 5 in the lineup tonight after using him in the cleanup spot for each of the first 17 games.
That could be partly due to facing a left-hander in Derek Holland, but if Hamilton were hitting well the handedness of the pitcher probably wouldn?t be much of a factor. Instead he?s just 12-for-68 (.176) with 23 strikeouts and a .570 OPS, and manager Mike Scioscia prefers Mike Trumbo behind Pujols.

China rushes relief after Sichuan quake kills scores
LUSHAN, China (AP) ? Luo Shiqiang sat near chunks of concrete, bricks and a ripped orange sofa and told how his grandfather was just returning from feeding chickens when their house collapsed and crushed him to death in this weekend's powerful earthquake in southwestern China.
"We lost everything in such a short time," the 20-year-old college student said Sunday. He said his cousin also was injured in the collapse, but that other members of his family were spared because they were out working in the fields of hard-hit Longmen village in Lushan county.
Saturday's earthquake in Sichuan province killed at least 186 people, injured more than 11,000 and left nearly two dozen missing, mostly in the rural communities around Ya'an city, along the same fault line where a devastating quake to the north killed more than 90,000 people in Sichuan and neighboring areas five years ago in one of China's worst natural disasters.
The Lushan and Baoxing counties hardest-hit on Saturday had escaped the worst of the damage in the 2008 quake, and residents there said they benefited little from the region's rebuilding after the disaster, with no special reinforcements made or new evacuation procedures introduced in their remote communities.
Luo said he wished more had been done to make his community's buildings quake-resistant. "Maybe the country's leaders really wanted to help us, but when it comes to the lower levels the officials don't carry it out," he said.
Relief teams flew in helicopters and dynamited through landslides Sunday to reach some of the most isolated communities, where rescuers in orange overalls led sniffer dogs through piles of brick, concrete and wood debris to search for survivors.
Many residents complained that although emergency teams were quick to carry away bodies and search for survivors, they had so far done little to distribute aid. "No water, no shelter," read a hand-written sign held up by children on a roadside in Longmen.
"I was working in the field when I heard the explosions of the earthquake, and I turned around and saw my house simply flatten in front of me," said Fu Qiuyue, a 70-year-old rapeseed farmer in Longmen.
Fu sat with her husband, Ren Dehua, in a makeshift shelter of logs and a plastic sheet on a patch of grass near where a helicopter had parked to reach their community of terraced grain and vegetable fields. She said the collapse of the house had crushed eight pigs to death. "It was the scariest sound I have ever heard," she said.
The quake ? measured by China's earthquake administration at magnitude 7.0 and by the U.S. Geological Survey at 6.6 ? struck shortly after 8 a.m. on Saturday. Tens of thousands of people moved into tents or cars, unable to return home or too afraid to go back as aftershocks continued to jolt the region.
The quake killed at least 186 people, left 21 missing and injured 11,393, the official Xinhua News Agency quoted the provincial emergency command center as saying.
As in most natural disasters, the government mobilized thousands of soldiers and others, sending excavators and other heavy machinery as well as tents, blankets and other emergency supplies. Two soldiers died after their vehicle slid off a road and rolled down a cliff, state media reported.
The Chinese Red Cross said it had deployed relief teams with supplies of food, water, medicine and rescue equipment to the disaster areas.
Lushan, where the quake struck, lies where the fertile Sichuan plain meets foothills that eventually rise to the Tibetan plateau and sits atop the Longmenshan fault, where the 2008 quake struck.
The seat of Lushan county has been turned into a large refugee camp, with tents set up on open spaces, and volunteers doling out noodles and boxed meals to survivors from stalls and the backs of vans.
A large van with a convertible side served as a mobile bank with an ATM, military medical trucks provided X-rays for people with minor injuries, and military doctors administered basic first aid, applying iodine solution to cuts and examining bruises.
Patients with minor ailments were lying in tents in the yard of the local hospital, which was wrecked by the quake, with the most severely injured patients sent to the provincial capital. With a limited water supply and buildings inaccessible, sanitation is a problem for the survivors.
One of the patients receiving care in the hospital's yard was the son of odd-job laborer Zhou Lin, 22. The baby boy was born a day before the quake struck. Zhou said he was relieved that his newborn son and wife were safe and healthy but was worried about his 60-year-old father and other relatives who have been unreachable in Baoxing.
"I can't get through on the phone, so I don't know what's going on there and they don't know if we are all right," he said.
Every so often, an aftershock struck, shaking windows of buildings and sending murmurs through the crowds.
